About the Author
Nicholas J. Garber is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia where he has been a member of the faculty since September of 1980. Before joining the University of Virginia, Dr. Garber was a Professor of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Sierra Leone, where he was also the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. At the State University of New York at Buffalo, he played an important role in the development of the graduate program in Transportation Engineering. For several years, he was a design engineer for consulting engineering firms in London, and also worked as an Area Engineer and Assistant Resident Engineer in Sierra Leone.

Lester A. Hoel is the L.A. Lacy Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Engineering and the Director of the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Virginia. He held the Hamilton Professorship in Civil Engineering from 1974-99. From 1974-89 he was Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering. Previously he was Professor of Civil Engineering and Associate Director, Transportation Research Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and on the faculty at San Diego State University. He also was principal engineer with Wilbur Smith and Associates and visiting professor at the Norwegian Technical University and the University of California at Irvine and a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley.

Very comprehensive and well written

As the transportation professor at West Virginia University, I take issue with the review from Braxton Lewis (one of my former students). This book does not have errors and we have been using it at West Virginia University for 12 years and will continue to do so.

The book covers all the major concepts needed to prepare students for advanced courses in transportation. Each chapter is well-written and gives just the right level of detail and technical content.

One very nice feature is that the book includes the charts, tables, etc from the desigh guides where appropriate. This way, the concepts are presented cleanly without students having to fumble through the various codes and design guides as they try to learn the concepts.

About the Author
Samuel Liddell (or Liddel) "MacGregor" Mathers, born as Samuel Liddell (January 8 or 11, 1854 - November 5 or 20, 1918), was one of the most influential figures in modern Occultism. He is primarily known as one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a ceremonial magic order of which offshoots still exist today. Mathers died on November 5 or November 20, 1918. The manner of his death is unknown; his death certificate lists no cause of death. Violet Firth claimed his death was the result of the Spanish influenza of 1918.

Is this a ripoff of the real S. Liddell Mathers?

This name is obviously tactically close to the real author S. Liddell Mathers who wrote the real Key of Solomon. Notice that this author uses one "L" at the end of his name but the real S. Liddell uses two "L"'s. Also, his last name "Mathus" is only slightly changed from the real author "Mathers". How can he openly do this? Does anyone know the story here?

About the Author
Irving Stone was born in San Francisco on July 14, 1903. He wrote several books in a genre that he coined the “biographical novel,” which recounted the lives of well-known historical figures. In these novels, Stone interspersed biography with fictional narrative on the psychology and private lives of his subjects. He also wrote biographies of Clarence Darrow and Earl Warren, and short biographies of men who lost presidential elections. He died on August 26, 1989.

A Masterpiece of a Book

I originally purchased this book out of curiosity. I wanted to learn about and study a genius' life. A lover of art and design, I was naturally drawn to Michelangelo. After a substantial research on the best biographies based on his life and work, I was more than convinced that this book was it. And it didn't disappoint me at all!

I had never been to Italy when I started reading. A few months later, my sister and I planned a weekend in Europe, and partly because of this book, I convinced my sister we had to spend a weekend in Rome. Shortly after, I spent a week in Florence, and it was the very first time I felt like an informed tourist, knowing what I was marveling at.

The Agony and the Ecstasy is a novel-like biography of Michelangelo intertwined with historical accounts and facts about his life. It is written in such a way you won't want to put the book down. I felt like I lived inside Michelangelo's head; like I really got to know his person, simultaneously studying art and design history. It's set during the Italian Renaissance, and Michelangelo was a central figure of that glorious period. The book is filled with information. So far, it is the most substantial book I've read, and it's the first time I've taken my time reviewing a book.

The book is by no means an easy read; It took me weeks to finish. In fact, when I first bought it, I had to set it aside before I made it halfway, and I had to re-read it from the start. As I read the last pages, my heart ached as Michelangelo was getting weaker and weaker. It was quite an experience feeling like I lived side by side such a genius. All the masterpieces he forged during his life—just wow!

This book has sparked a deeper interest in me for art and design, and now for a newfound love: sculpture.

Even better the second time around.

I first read this book when it originally came out. And when my book club decided to read it, I didn't object because I remembered that I liked it. Well, I think I enjoyed it more the second time. I was fascinated by the historical background and learned a lot about that time period....and about the making of sculpture. The characters were fleshed out enough to be interesting and added information to what I had learned in history classes--although as in all historical fiction, it would be nice to know what is real and what is the author's imagination. The book is well written and an easy and interesting read. If you are planning a trip to Italy, I would definitely put it on my pre-trip reading list.

When history, art and storytelling team up

When I first received the recommendation to read it, I thought that it would be a boring description of times long gone with a silver lining in the art itself.

Boy was I wrong !

It is an incredible journey through time with twists and plots that revolve around art, religion, politics as well as romance, friendship and family.
It is a story about the struggle to follow your passion to whatever end. It is the kind of book that left me with a sense of "OK.. now what? What could I read to be on par with Mr. Stone's creation?"

Let's say that from now on, I will never look at sculpture or art as a whole with the same eyes.

Even though I knew that it was a biography work, I still read it like a fiction book and this helped putting me in every situation described.

Ken Saro-Wiwa's book brings us face to face with people we otherwise only see at a distance on TV as masses being hurled about by chaos and war. We see the world through the eyes of the "soldier boy" himself, a world that is perhaps alien to us at first but that increases in familiarity with every increase in compassion and identification with the main character, whom we get to know increasingly as a real human being who lives life differently but fundamentally on our terms also. The novel is a "must read" for anyone who tries to come to terms with the realities of the Third World.

Not a Fan...At All

I understand that the way the book is written and more specifically the language used is supposed to reflect the inner turmoil of the character and the disorganized nature of the country during the war, however I hated the way the book was written. The author himself noted that the language used in the book is nothing like the way people in Nigeria actually speak. On top of that, the Rotten English (actual term) used is very difficult to follow. There are words that have three different meanings, can be used as both a noun and a verb, and will often be used as such in the same sentence, requiring the reader to continuously look up the various meanings in the back of the book. As someone who loves to read and doesn't like to leave a book unfinished, I can honestly say that I never finished this book and don't ever plan to. Unless this book is required for a literature class, don't waste your time.

One of my very favorite books

I read Sozaboy about once a year. I love it. I don't know how many copies I've given away, a dozen at least. I never tire of it.

A key feature of this book is the language. The author calls it "rotten English". Rotten English is a mix of Pidgeon English, corrupted English and good English. The voice is musical and magical. I can hear my West African friends in my ear as I read.

The language is evocative. You are there. You see this man-child move from place to place, from side to side, never really understanding the world around him. What soldier really grasps the meaning and purpose of war? What soldier can really find his or her own place in the chaos? Right and wrong get lost in the meat grinder.

The last paragraph never fails to make me weep.

"And I was thinking how I was prouding before to go to soza and call myself Sozaboy. But now if anybody say anything about war or even fight, I will just run and run and run and run and run. Believe me yours sincerely."

It stands up with the very best anti war fiction.

Ever since 1998, when I read the books “Reminiscence of a Stock Operator” and “Soros on Soros”, I have been obsessed with the top traders in the world. I have read about 200 books on how to trade stocks, most of them multiple times. Now I finally pull myself together and write the ultimate book on the best traders of the world – the Hedge Fund Self-made Billionaires. This book turns out to be a long research project. Their total number of hedge fund self-made billionaires in the world is 48. Each one is a fascinating story, and a unique learning experience.
Call them overpaid or call them villain if you will, but the Hedge Fund Self-made Billionaires are the best traders in the world. In a unregulated environment, they can go long or short, use leverage, go off-shore etc. The flip side of the unregulated industry is that hedge funds are notorious for their death rate, about 10% a year. It is extremely hard to make it as a top trader, and it is equally hard to remain a top trader. They are also the BEST PAID people in the world, earning between $1B to up to $4B a year. They get paid 50 to 100 times better than the best of Hollywood stars, star athletes and best entertainers.
My first curiosity is: who are they? Well, it turns out this group is highly homogenous. 100% of them are founders of their own hedge fund firm. 100% are white males. No woman, no blacks, no Asian, no Arab or Latinos. They are highly educated, with 90% of them getting their degree from the most prestigious universities in the world. Because of high death rate and cut-throat competition, most traders keep their mouth shut to the public and even their investors. In this book, I will try my best to uncover as many of their trade secrets as I possibly can. In each biography, I include a section called QUOTES, in which I collected quotation from the traders themselves – how they view the world, how they uncover opportunities and how they trade.
My second curiosity is: how do they make their money? Well, this one turns out to be highly differentiated. Some made it in macro-top-down such as George Soros. Some made it using sophisticated computer modeling. Some made it with fundamental value bottom-up approach. Some made it through buying distressed debt, including sovereign debt. 90% of them started their career working decades for previous generation of famous traders before they went their own and found their own companies.
Other interesting facts: Slightly over 50% of them are Jewish. About 20% either received their Harvard MBA or graduated from Harvard U. For the group as a whole, their average age is 58, which is 7 years younger than the average age of self-made billionaires. Their average net worth is $4.47B, which is also about $1B above the average. This is really a fantastic field for anyone to get into.
Now, what if you are not one of these genius trader but like to improve and start making the big bucks, I have included 3 special chapters to help our readers. (1) one chapter with a universal chart (works about 70% of time for tech stock). (2) one chapter with a recommendation of 12 books written about or by these self-made billionaire traders. (3) a conclusion chapter in which I outline 22 Lessons from these top traders.
I want this book to be fast-pace, entertaining and educational. I adopt the 6 W approach: (1) why do we study them (2) who are they (3) what is my methodology (4) what are their backgrounds, i.e. breakdown by nationality, ethnicity, gender, age etc. have also structured this book so 80% are biographical. Trading is 80% practice and 20% theory. As in any fields, the shortest road to success is to learn from the best, I hope this book is your shortest road to trading success. Lastly, some word of caution, trading involves a lot of hard work and is not for the mentally lazy or those looking for a silver bullet. It takes decades of experience and specialization to excel. She is often interviewed in TV shows, magazines and newspapers for insights about parenting through children's drawings. Michal manages a national forum about children's drawings analysis, providing parental guidance based on drawings. She is part of a "Super Nanny" team of experts, which specializes in supporting families with complex parental issues. Finally, she also provides written expertise to courts of law, based on analysis of children's drawings, mainly in the context of family abuse and children at risk. This book does justice to its name.

A complete guide to analyzing children's drawings. It is a good book to have when a parent or therapist suspects that a child has an emotional problem. Michal Wimmer gives many examples of drawings by children in difficult situations such as jealousy towards a newborn sibling, divorce, abuse, being bullied, learning disabilities or illness. Wimmer also gives numerous examples of how a child expresses emotions. These many examples help the reader to understand the deeper meaning of the drawing and how a child experiences his/her problem or situation. The book gives practical advice on how to respond to a drawing and helps parents bettter cope with or respond to their child's problem. This professional and useful advise comes from vast experience and real love for the well-being of the child. This book is a must-have for art therapists and play therapists all over the world.

The book is packed with interesting examples of drawings, clear explanations and updated theoretical knowledge.

Good for newbies to NAS networking systems

For a beginner, this is a good start. For someone who is about to set up a new Synology unit for the 1st time and who is not familiar with networking operating systems, I would recommend this book.

Unfortunately, if you have already installed the OS following the provided instructions, you will know too much for this book to advance your knowledge. It is not a reference book. I was disappointed to find that the page count is irrelevant as quite a number of the pages are only one paragraph long.

I gave it 3 stars because for someone with no understanding of networking, this is a smooth start to get you going.

On the up side, I would purchase another book by the author if he went into depth on the OS.

Excellent Guide for IT Do-It-Yourselfers

Excellent guide for those of us who are do-it-yourselfers with no IT support staff. Mr. Rushton provides step-by-step guidance for selecting RAID level and installing and configuring DSM. The book contains enough information about networking for a person with general computer knowledge to understand and follow the connectivity steps and security options.

This eBook contains 178 illustrations - primarily screen captures - that make the guide very easy to follow. However, the illustrations weren't very clear on my Kindle Paperwhite. The author recognizes the potential for that problem. The book's Intro contains an email address to contact the author. With proof of purchase from Amazon, he will email a PDF file containing all the illustrations that are crisp, clear, and easy to see. I submitted a request late on a Friday night and received the PDF in less than 2 hours.

The "Synology NAS Setup Guide" is exactly what I needed to feel confident enough to install two Synology DiskStations.

I had been keeping my eyes on this book for years, holding my breath to see if the price will drop a little bit before I grab one. Finally I bought a Bb one with lower price in Amazon. I don't mind what Key version it is cuz I play all kind of musical instruments. I read many other reviews, some people misunderstood what the Key version means and wrote "Oh.. don't buy it, the sheets are not C Key..." or so on...

Bet this is the only fake book comes with a CD of some of the songs. Only the CD is worth more than what you paid.
