There is always a need to motivate and inspire those whom we count on to inspire our children. If the author is able to illustrate this through examples, humor and warmth-I think this will be most valuable. One can never have too much motivation.

The material seems to be organized in a logical manner. I think the case studies always help people to identify better and they are then more likely to use the techniques or information outlined. Im confident that case studies that have been taken from actual incidents will be universal to all those in this industry and easy to relate to.

From what I can see in the outline, this looks like a very thorough and relevant resource for early childhood education. Most Center Directors or management either use nothing or use something more suited to the outside business world and many applications do not apply to childcare. I think this resource would be very beneficial to them.

The authors writing style was clear and concise. It is appropriate for the audience and keeps the readers attention. I enjoyed the writing style.

About the Author
Lynn R. Marotz, Ph.D., R.N., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Life at the University of Kansas. She also serves as the Associate Director of the university's Child Development Center. Ms. Marotz is co-chair of the Higher Education Consortium on Early Childhood Education. She is a member of the Stakeholder's Advisory Committee/Early Childhood Council, Kansas State Board of Education. She is also a member of the Kansas Early Care and Education Professional Development Initiative, as well as a member of the Early Childhood Professional Preparation Initiative. She is a council member for the Gateway's to Early Childhood Careers Project and serves as a board member for the Douglas County Child Development Association (NAEYC Affiliate). In 1998, she was a visiting scholar at Arizona State University and is a former finalist for University Employee of the Year (1997).

Amy Lawson is the Director of Child Care Services at the Seay Child Care Center of Presbyterian Hospital at Plano. She holds a B.A. in Human Development and Family/Early Childhood Education.

About the Author

Wallace R. Blischke obtained a B.S. in Mathematics from Elmhurst College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics from Cornell University. His early employment included aerospace and consulting firms. He joined the faculty of the University of Southern California in 1972, where he taught in the School of Business for 27 years. Dr. Blischke is currently Professor Emeritus, Marshall School of Business, USC, and is a private consultant specializing in data analysis, experimental design, sampling, reliability, quality assurance, warranty, and litigation support. He has over 50 publications in statistics, reliability, warranty analysis, and related areas, has co-authored or edited five books (three on warranty and two on reliability), and has presented papers and lectures at numerous conferences and universities on five continents. Dr. Blischke is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and has served as Associate Editor of several scientific journals.

M. Rezaul Karim obtained Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master of Science degrees in Statistics from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and a Doctor of Engineering degree from the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan. For the last sixteen years he has been working in the Department of Statistics at the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and is currently at the rank of professor. His research fields of interest are: quality and reliability analysis, warranty claim analysis, industrial statistics, bio-statistics, and statistical computing. He has considerable research experience in his fields, has published 15 papers in international refereed journals, and presented 20 papers at various conferences and workshops in seven countries. He has written a few chapters on warranty claims data analysis in such books as the Handbook of Statistics and the Encyclopedia of Statistics in Quality and Reliability. He served as an assistant editor of the International Journal of Statistical Sciences for two years and worked as a committee member of several international conferences and workshops on warranty and reliability modeling and analysis. He is a member of five professional associations.

D. N. Prabhakar Murthy obtained B.E. (Electrical Engineering) and M.E. (Applied Electronics) degrees from Jabalpur University and the Indian Institute of Science in India, and M.S. and Ph.D. (Applied Mathematics) degrees from Harvard University. He is currently Professor Emeritus at The University of Queensland. In the past he has held visiting academic appointments at several universities in the USA, Europe, Asia and Australasia.

Pra Murthy is the author or co-author of 165 journal papers and has presented over 150 papers at various conferences around the world. He is the co-author of six books, and the co-editor of three books and several conference proceedings. He has run short courses on various topics of reliability and warranty around the world and is on the editorial boards of eight international journals.

So far this book has been very interesting. I have just started doing this warranty analysis at work so this has helped bring a lot of things in perspective. It is technical at times with equations but looking forward to being able to do a better job by understanding more.

About the Author

GREG GLINER most recently worked at AQR Capital Management on the Global Asset Allocation team and as an analyst at Tudor Investment Corporation, a global macro hedge fund focusing on discretionary macro in equities, commodities, foreign exchange, and fixed income. Prior to this, he was with Thracian Capital (a hedge fund seeded by Man Group PLC/GLG), where he was a Portfolio Manager. Gliner also worked at BNP Paribas in their equity derivatives business and was also with Citigroup's Financial Institution Group in investment banking where he was involved in various M&A, equity, and debt transactions. He holds MBAs from Columbia Business School and London Business School, and has a BS and BA from Miami University (OH) in finance and history.

An interesting, useful and instructive book

There is an ocean of books out there that offer fundamental and technical analysis both for the neophyte and the professional. Usually these books are focused in depth on relatively narrow topics....there is nothing wrong with that.

Mr. Gliner however, offers a wider view in his book, a review of four classes of assets and their inter-relationship. It is clear from the reading, that each one of these assets is affected by the performance of the others on a day-to-day basis. In my view the explanations of the mechanisms of their interdependency is the most valuable contribution of this book. Further, the reader can extract ideas and methods for building a complex portfolio on a global and informed basis, and learn how to rotate between classes of assets to optimize benefit, and manage risk. For all the reasons above, and as it introduces and explains elementary concepts that are then woven into advanced techniques, the book represents an exceptional instructional value that I highly recommend to both the amateur and the professional investors; each one can extract useful and applicable knowledge at their respective level of expertise. Last, but not least, the introduction and summaries presented in each chapter are very useful in reviewing quickly the material covered.

Fantastic Book!

I've been a big fan of Greg Gliner for many years. His ability to take the complex subject of Global Macro, distill it down to its most important components, and explain them in a way that provides a deep conceptual understanding is unrivaled. This book covers everything there is to know about the subject and I suspect will be used by aspiring alpha generators for many years. It'll be interesting to see whether this book ends up on the bookshelves of portfolio managers, or tucked into their drawers where they want to secret it away as their own personal treasure trove. My advice to readers is to order two copies, one for yourself, and one to give to your financial advisor to make sure they have the right knowledge to manage your portfolio.

Ill-gotten Possession of the USA! Conquest by illegal means!

While the political implications have real life significance for Hawaiians ( Kanaka Ma'oli), the fact that the U. S. A. Is responsible for the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy is not well-known nor appreciated by most Americans! Osorio is pointed in making this known. The very fact that Americans & other White foreigners worked to overthrow King Kalākaūa & Queen Liliuokalani in collaboration with the U.S. Ambassador Stevens in violation of the U. S. constitution, is very clear! It is bane on the philosophy of American so-called democracy!

Osorio shows how the progression of hate, disdain, greed, misinformation, & ill-incited practices of western ethnocentrism slowly & progressively brought the ill-gotten prize of Pearl Harbor, Honolulu Harbor, & lands for the "protection" of the USA to the it's possession! Hidden in all, is the intent of the westerners to protect their money & investments in a country not theirs to take.

A good read!

I loved Zombie World. There were many things I greatly appreciated about the plot and the improvement of the writing style. I loved Zombie Island, wasn't a huge fan on Zombie Country, but this was amazing. Samantha's writing style definitely matured, which made for a well-rounded novel. I loved Sam and Ryder's relationship, it felt true and not at all forced. This book had me crying and laughing at times. It also had my heart fluttering when Ryder was sweet to Sam. The main characters had plenty of depth, but the supporting cast could've had more to them. (IE: Todd) Overall, it was an amazing read and I will be reading more of her work. This book is well worth the price, if you like Zombies I suggest you read this series!

Novelist Wallace (Infinite Jest) might just be the smartest essayist writing today. His topics are various—this new collection treats porn, sports autobiographies and the vagaries of English usage, among others—his perspective always slightly askew and his observations on point. Wallace is also frustrating to read. This arises from a few habits that have elevated him to the level of both cause c�l�bre and enfant terrible in the world of letters. For one thing, he uses abbrs. w/r/t just about everything without warning or, most of the time, context. For another, he inserts long footnotes and parenthetical asides that by all rights should be part of the main texts (N.B.: These usually occur in the middle of phrases, so that the reader cannot recall the context by the time the parentheses are wrapped up) but never are. These tricks are adequately postmodern (a term Wallace is intelligent enough to question) to prove his cleverness. But a writer this gifted doesn't need such cleverness. Wallace's words and ideas, as well as a wonderful sense of observation that makes even the most shopworn themes seem fresh, should suffice.

It’s a well-accepted proposition that Wallace, a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant recipient, is one of the most brilliant essayists alive. But it’s another matter altogether whether his work—at once luminous, provocative, digressive, and frustrating—finds the audience it deserves. Like Infinite Jest (1996) and A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again (1997), this collection showcases Wallace’s love of language, emotional IQ, and curiosity about the world (and the starlets who populate it). His trademark footnotes, essays in themselves, rarely fail to entertain—if you can follow them. But a few critics ask whether this collection exhibits more high jinks than actual intellectual insight; the arrows and boxed comments in the essay "Host," for example, may just obscure a Very Important Point. But that may be the point—to get you thinking about much more than the lobster.

In his latest essay collection, Wallace, known best for his expansive metafiction, traverses a wide swathe of territory, swinging from a consideration of pornography to a reading of John Updike (perhaps not such a stretch), from the 2000 campaign trail of Republican John McClain to reflections on Kafka and Dostoyevsky, and from Bloomington, Illinois, to lobster-trawling Maine. The uberliterate Wallace is a subtle Hunter Thompson, pointed, yet sly, in directing transitions to reveal his true intention--that is, he misleads, then opens up. Humorous, engaging, albeit a bit perplexing in his style, he is a little too trendy in his postmodern use of boxes, arrows, footnotes, and so on. But when Wallace is on the mark, few can compare in craft and craftiness. And there is enough that is uncool here to make it cool in a truly culty sense. Not Perfect, but Awfully Good

I've never read Wallace, mostly because his best known work ("Infinite Jest") is so long. But I tend to like writers that digress and use footnotes for asides, so I thought maybe this collection of ten essays would give me enough of a taste to know if I should check out his other stuff. Ranging in length from 7 to 80 pages, the essays all appeared previously (albeit often truncated) in various magazines such as Harper's, The Atlantic, Gourmet, Rolling Stone, Premier, etc. They can be roughly categorized into three categories: brief review, personal piece, and long in-depth topical examination.

The brief reviews generally tend to take an item and use it as a staging area for discussing something more interesting than the given subject. For example, in "Certainly the End of Something or Other", Wallace uses his review of John Updike's novel Toward the End of Time to highlight the general narcissism and shallowness of writers such as Updike, Philip Roth, and Norman Mailer. His 20-page review of Joseph Frank's biography of Dostoevsky is largely dedicated to making a larger point about literary criticism, and his 25-page review of tennis player Tracy Austin's autobiography is similarly dedicated to identifying the fundamental problem of sports memoirs. I have to admit that the essential point of the shortest piece, "Some Remarks on Kafka's Funniness", eluded me.

The two more personal pieces are strikingly different, but in each one gets a vivid impression of Wallace working through his own feelings. In, "The View From Mrs. Thompson's", he uses 13 pages to recount his own September 11 experience in Bloomington, Indiana. As one reads of the mysterious sprouting of flags, Wallace's hunt for a flag of his own, and his spending the day watching the footage with old ladies who've never been to New York, his mounting alienation from his neighbors is fascinating. The titular story is ostensibly a standard travel piece on a Maine lobster festival, but rapidly evolves into a thoughtful meditation (with scientific research) on the ethics of preparing and eating lobster.

The four in-depth essays are the real stars of the book, in each Wallace gets deep into his material and wallows in it with intellectual vigor and above all, wit. In the 50-page "Big Red Son", he covers the porn Oscars and emerges with scenes and quotes so surreal they must be true. Over the course of the 50-page "Authority and American Usage", he takes a topic close to his heart as a writing instructor and provides a layman's overview of the Prescriptivist vs. Descriptivist "usage wars". The underbelly of political campaigning is exposed in the 80-page "Up Simba", detailing his week on the John McCain's 2000 campaign trail -- the ultimate lesson is that if you want the most astute and nuanced political analysis, turn to the camera and sound techs, not the journos. Finally, the 70-page "Host" takes us into the world of talk radio, via a profile of an LA radio personality. All of these long pieces are wonderful (albeit in very different ways), as they allow Wallace's intellect the space to range free and elaborate.

Ultimately, it's not hard to see why Wallace is a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" award-winner. His combination of smarts, thoughtfulness, self-awareness, wit, and ability to write killer prose simply can't be ignored. One does have to raise an eyebrow at his overuse of footnotes, however. While I'm a big fan of footnotes (yes, even in fiction), I find Wallace's use of footnotes within footnotes rather tiresome (not to mention tough on the eyes). In many instances, it seems like the material could have been handled much more elegantly within the text, or within a parenthetical. This is especially true of "Host", which is very nearly ruined by the attempt to use boxed text and arrows to replace footnotes. There's no textual reason for the method, and the experiment doesn't work at all, only serving to highlight the unnecessary divisions of information and reducing their navigability.

Although a few of the pieces failed to totally captivate me, and the overfootnoting grated (especially in it's final iteration), this is still a highly entertaining and enlightening book. Chuck Klosterman's essays are like potato chips -- yummy, hard to stop at just one, and not super filling. Wallace's are generally a full nutritious meal at your favorite restaurant.

Wallace (finally?) delivers the goods

Probably no contemporary writer has to meet higher expectations than David Foster Wallace. He's a genius. Ask anyone. In some cases, this works against him; as someone who survived reading Wallace's essay collection A SUPPOSEDLY FUN THING..., I can testify that Mr. Wallace sometimes has aspirations that even his prodigious skills can't meet, and the results ain't pretty.

But in CONSIDER THE LOBSTER, he is hitting on almost all of his many cylinders. In fact, it is high praise indeed for me to report that on a flight to Phoenix, I was laughing so hard at this book's first essay (it's about a pornography awards show), I almost felt compelled to explain to my fellow passenger the source of my mirth.

I didn't. (I'm not insane.) But it was that good.

The rest of the topics examined by Wallace's gimlet eyes are, shall we say, wide-ranging, but aside from an enervating and lengthy examination of A DICTIONARY OF MODERN USAGE, Wallace lives up to his "genius" billing. I did grimace when I saw that the book contained a piece devoted to one of his pet topics, (namely tennis), but even this essay transcended its subject and was eminently worthwhile.

In short, I'm quite glad to have read this book. More, please.

At the Top of His Game

First off, "Consider the Lobster" is one of the all-time great titles. Even better: the writing. D.F. Wallace can be more difficult than James Joyce (and make Shakespeare look like Classic Comics) (viz. the unfathomable "Infinite Jest") but his essays...particularly his magazine pieces...are infinitely more accessible. The title piece here is a tragi-comedy about the ethics of boiling lobsters alive (wrapped in a funny, frothy story about attending the Maine Lobster Festival...although I bet he wasn't invited back).
