I suggest you read Muir's book

The writings in this book provide a foundation of appreciation for all encompassing "nature". This book can be judged by title... John Muir is genius, and a poet! His depth of knowledge (engineering, botany) is evident throughout, and his passion to study everything natural is unsurpassed. He was beyond todays definition of "motivated." His book inspired me to backpack the JMT. Between this book, and hiking "his" trail, I owe my broader spiritual sense to him.

Muir should be required reading, period.

I've only read "My First Summer in the Sierra," and attest to Muir's enchanting style and lucidity. He writes as an enthusiast, but gives his stories a plain-spoken clarity that can be enjoyed by all.

Muir must have been quite an individual - after working as a shepherd for a few months, he talks of getting time off from his employer, "tying some bread to his belt, and walking to Mammoth" from the Merced area of the western foothills of the Sierras. Yep, a nice casual stroll. Or climbing and looking down into the ice cone on Yosemite Falls. Why not? It's there every winter...

I hope Library of America will put out another volume so they can make "The Yosemite" available to all. In it, Muir describes the three native Californian "Yosemite" (Tuolumne, Sequoia, and Kings) almost as a tour guide. This book is a glaring omission from the LoA volume, and gives great insight into the mind of the premier conservationist of the early 1900s.

As always, LoA delivers a quality volume at a good price.

I have long admired May Sarton's willingness to tackle tough subjects that deal with the inner reality of her characters as they face issues or things about themselves that are not always pleasant. One of my favorite works for example is A Reckoning, in which a woman comes to terms with her own premature dying. Here in As We Are Now, however, Sarton pushes past even her own limits to probe an issue that festers behind the scenes of our youth-obsessed culture - the relegation of the elderly to rest homes, nursing facilities and sanitariums; any place in short where the rest of society doesn't have to see or think about them. What makes Sarton's book such an achievement is how she is able to depict the sordidness and relentless oppression experienced by her main character Caro, while infusing her at the same time with a dignity and strength of character that transcends the worst the situation can dish out. The triumph of the novel is that in the end, we come to see Caro not as an elderly woman, but as a woman infused with a light of her own making.
The story begins with Caro being placed in a rest home by her older brother. Caro has had a heart attack and can no longer live in her own home, and the older brother's younger wife can't handle having Caro live with them. Unfortunately, or perhaps predictably, the rest home is little more than a holding tank where the residents are treated like mentally deficient children, and any attempt to buck the system results in punishment. The most disturbing aspect of the whole thing, however, is that Caro is perceptive, bright and very much alive. A former teacher with students who still write her, she reads and studies poetry, observes and comments astutely on her fellow residents, and replays her favorite music in her mind to keep herself busy. As a reader you want someone to do something, for some long lost relative to appear, a former student to offer a haven, or the visiting minister to report the abominable conditions. Only slowly do you, like Caro, become resigned to the fact that this is what happens to the elderly in our society, and come to realize that the only escape will forged within and by herself.
That Sarton has managed to give her character dignity, that the novel stands as a testament to the strength and beauty of the human spirit rather than a condemnation of society, is remarkable. This book should be read by anyone who has or will be faced with the issue of aging - in other words by everyone.

What being a lawyer is really about

In Lawyers as Peacemakers, Kim uses her gifts of collection and connection to create and display a showcase of what being a lawyer is really about. For those that thought law school would be a great way to make a difference in the world but came out the other side unsure of how a J.D. really helps, this book is a must-read. For those who struggle to "balance" their fractured personal and professional selves, this book is a must-read. Kim has created a compendium, a hands-on guide, and, most importantly, a voice of acceptance for holistic law.

Lawyers as Peacemakers a MUST read!

Wright's Lawyers as Peacemakers is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, providing a wealth of ideas for everyone in ANY profession who yearns for a better, more compassionate world. Although this book targets the legal profession, everyone can understand it and apply the ideas to his or her own profession and personal life. Wright explains the essence of therapeutic jurisprudence, which is practicing law with the purpose of restoring and maintaining the well being of all the people involved, including the clients, the victims, the offenders, the lawyers, and the community. This book is NOT fluffy idealism. It provides very practical and doable solutions and techniques for problem solving and conflict resolution. It shows how we can all relate to each other in compassionate ways rather than adversarial. It explains the benefits of this approach, which in most situations enormously outweigh the benefits of the traditional win-lose adversarial approach. Wright does not preach. She shows exactly how a win-win outcome is accomplished. She has done her homework and reveals that this approach to doing business can actually be much more financially profitable than the traditional win-lose approach, in addition to improving the emotional and physical well being of all the people involved. It is one thing to say we should all care about each other, and another altogether to explain how to do it. Wright does the latter.
