I do not recommend this book to a beginner, who've just entered this field as the contents are somewhat unorganized. I think that as a reader, an author focuses his book mainly for experienced mold designers.
But overall, if you are an experienced mold designer, who's looking into specific details of tool making, this is a welcome addition to your book collection.

About the Author
Pat Libby is a management consultant to non-profits and philanthropies who views the work of nonprofit organizations through the kaleidoscope of her experiences as a long-time CEO, board member, academic and consultant to innumerable organizations.�Her 21-year consulting practice involves working with organizations to recruit executives, think and plan strategically, and find practical solutions to complex problems.

For 14 years until July 2015, she served the University of San Diego as the founding director of its Nonprofit Institute which comprises nonprofit-focused graduate programs, a research center and community education programs serving hundreds of people and organizations each year. The Institute is frequently cited as one of the nation’s premier academic centers dedicated to advancing the work of philanthropic organizations. �In creating the Institute, Pat realized a vision for an academic center that would interweave research, theory, and practice.

Her extensive executive management experience also includes 8 years as president/CEO of the Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations. While there, she transformed a financially bankrupt organization into a nationally recognized model for statewide CDC associations, leveraging nearly $200 million for Massachusetts community development efforts in the process.�

Pat is also �the author of two books.�The Lobbying Strategy Handbook�(SAGE Publications, 2012), an engaging "how-to" guide for nonprofit practitioners who are seeking a simple blueprint for learning how to take part in the legislative process, and, with Laura Deitrick,�Cases in Nonprofit Management (SAGE 2016).

A Boston native, Pat holds a graduate degree in Urban Planning from MIT and a bachelor's degree in Spanish and Sociology from Tufts University.

Lobbying made accessible for everyone

I don't usually review books on lobbying, but that has more to do with the fact that there are few good books written on this important act of advocacy. I have been a lobbyist for a trade association for over 25 years and I would have loved to have been given a resource like Pat Libby's book when I started out in the business. Don't get me wrong, there is considerable material out there on the political process, it is just that it is not very usable to the average person interested in promoting a legislative cause or agenda.

What I like about The Lobbying Strategy Handbook is that it gives a fairly sound foundation in the basics of law making, the governmental budgeting process and lobbying. The most important part follows with a clear, "how to", ten-step advocacy campaign procedure, with some real life case studies.

The author created and directs a university institute for non-profit education in California and previously ran several non-profits, lobbying for their key issues. She clearly knows what she is writing about from first hand experiences. The reader might not qualify for a degree reading this book, but they will certainly know how to develop and promote a legislative strategy.

Lobbying is not just for the "high rollers" working the corridors of power in Washington. Pat makes this whole advocacy procedure accessible to everyone, especially on the local level. And isn't that what our democratic process is really all about - giving every citizen the abilities to make changes in the way our government works.

Whether your interest is that of a future lobbysit, or a citizen who wants to protest or change public policy, this is a good book to start your project. Many good examples on how you might proceed in the lobbying arena.

never leave home without it

Utilizing the 10 Step model as outlined in The Lobbying Strategy Handbook was incredibly beneficial to improving my effectiveness as an advocate, as well as strengthening my understanding of the lobbying process and the nonprofit sector's role in it. Ultimately, I now recognize that in order to truly serve and represent the needs of our constituents, and to uphold the full responsibility of our sector, nonprofits need to be active in formally advocating for policy change. If we aren't advocating on a formal, public level we simply aren't doing our job, and no one else will do it for us.

Furthermore, I have come to recognize that the 10 Steps are applicable to many situations in which I may seek to create change--even if not at the formal policy level. Essentially the 10 Steps offer a leadership model to use in identifying a problem, proposing a solution, and building the support necessary to influence others to take action around it.

This was easy-to-read, easily navigable, and super useful!

About the Author

Ronald Quan is a member of SMPTE, IEEE, and the AES. He worked on the design of wideband FM detectors for an HDTV tape recorder at Sony Corporation, and a twice-color subcarrier frequency (7.16 MHz) NTSC vector-scope for measuring differential phase and gain for Macrovision, where he was a Principal Engineer. Ronald currently holds at least 65 US patents in the areas of analog video processing, low noise audio and video amplifier design, low distortion voltage controlled amplifiers, wide band crystal VCOs, video monitors, audio and video IQ modulation, audio and video scrambling, bar code reader products, audio test equipment, and video copy protection.

Analog electronics education in a hobbyist book on transistor radios

I must admit that I came to this book somewhat math challenged.
I tend to be more interested in a historical perspective. But having said that, Mr. Quan has written a book that somehow manages to cover all bases here.

Using the AM radio as a context, starting with the most basic simple circuits, then building upon each concept, he manages to cover the history and development of the major types of circuits used for AM radio reception, and the math and theory behind each circuit building block, show plans and schematics with detailed parts lists and sources to not only construct several types of AM radios, but also to make your own test oscillators and modulators for developing and testing circuits under construction. He also has a section covering the details of other equipment needed, and some inexpensive ways to obtain it, to equip your "radio electronics experimentation lab".

He goes on to discuss improvements to circuits and trade-offs in further development between performance, cost and power consumption giving you the chance to improve designs previously constructed and measure the improvements.
All this is presented in a well illustrated, intuitive, entertaining, easy to grasp form, that actually manages to give a reasonably complete analog electronics education by covering the various building blocks of the humble AM transistor radio including power supplies, oscillators and amplifiers as well as everything else specific to an AM radio.

If you spend any time with this book you will not only learn to build and design your own AM radio circuits, but you will be well on your way to understanding a lot of the theory behind all analog electronic design. Well done !

Build Your Own Transistor Radios

This book is a very refreshing book with a unique approach to radio receiver design. Don't be fooled by the title, "Building Your Own Transistor Radios". This book is almost auto biographic. It takes many of the author's boyhood experiences with simple crystal radios and relives that experience. However, with 35 years in the industry and over 70 US patents, he can now gives a much more thorough analysis of how and why the simple crystal radio works and how to improve it.

The author then proceeds to improve the performance of a simple crystal radio. Covering the analysis of amplifiers, mixers, and filters and using these building blocks to construct his "super radios". A unique chapter is given on "Inductorless Radios". Using Gyrators as inductors, Mr. Quan shows several radio architectures using op amps to construct gyrators (and thus inductors) and build successful high performance radios. There is even a chapter on how to make your own signal generators for testing these circuits.

The book can be described as broken into two sections. The first section for the casual hobbyist who wants to improve his/her understanding of radio receiver design and a second section for the more advanced radio engineer. The second section on analysis of distortion and noise is more typically taught at the graduate level at most engineering schools.

The Chapters on Software Define (SDR) radios takes the reader from superheterodyne architecture to the present state of the art SDR radio using I and Q of a radio signal. He goes on the say, "With I and Q you can demodulate anything." Although one does not need to understand all the trigonometry involved in deriving many of the equations, Mr. Quan takes a step by step approach to the derivations. This approach is lacking in most radio text books.

Last, Mr. Quan covers a chapter on bipolar noise with real life examples and numerical calculations for common components and configurations.

This is a very refreshing book and most of it can be read not as rigorous college engineering text book but more like a "novel" for the radio hobbyist.

A nice, interesting book for tinkerers

At first, I was a bit disappointed in the book, as the first few chapters were very elementary for the rank amateur or beginning hobbyist. However, the following chapters quickly delved into some good transistor radio projects, with the later chapters devoted to the theory (and math) of the receiver circuitry and the energy saving (low power) techniques. It was a good read, plenty of fodder for some future projects, and a nice reference book for my electronics library as well. Very well written and easy to read schematics. You will get something out of it and learn a few things regardless of your knowledge level.
