The Drowned Cities, by Paolo Bacigalupi

This thrilling companion to Paolo Bacigalupi's Michael L. Printz Award winner Ship Breaker is a haunting and powerful story of loyalty, survival, and heart-pounding adventure.
In a dark future America where violence, terror, and grief touch everyone, young refugees Mahlia and Mouse have managed to leave behind the war-torn lands of the Drowned Cities by escaping into the jungle outskirts. But when they discover a wounded half-man--a bioengineered war beast named Tool--who is being hunted by a vengeful band of soldiers, their fragile existence quickly collapses. One is taken prisoner by merciless soldier boys, and the other is faced with an impossible decision: Risk everything to save a friend, or flee to a place where freedom might finally be possible.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-In the ruins of an America toppled by greed, gas shortages, and flooding caused by climate change, civil war runs rampant. Orphans Mahlia and Mouse have been taken in by a kindly doctor, but when they cross the wrong soldier boys, even he may not be able to save them. Mahlia has turned hateful and pessimistic since the maiming that left her without a right hand. She decides that hope lies in saving a bioengineered soldier-beast, a half-man, who could protect her as she flees the Drowned Cities. It is only when Mouse is taken by soldier boys that Mahlia turns deep into the city's broken heart to try to rescue him. Joshua Swanson brings to life Bacigalupi's dark and compelling companion (2012) to his Printz Award-winning title, Ship Breaker (2010, both Little, Brown). Good pacing and staunch delivery keep listeners on the edge of their seats as Mahlia and Mouse fight to survive in a post-apocalyptic America. The inclusion of a creepy half-man ratchets up the tension a notch for the whole second half of the listening experience. In libraries where patrons are clamoring for solid dystopian novels, this will be a solid choice.-Jessica Miller, West Springfield Public Library, MAα(c) Copyright 2011. If "Mockingjay" or Chaos Walking Trilogy are your favorite reads, "The Drowned Cities" is your next natural reading choice.

"The Drowned Cities'" predecessor (and loose companion) "Ship Breaker" has already won Printz and was short-listed for National Book Award, and rightfully so. But I am wondering right now - was it not a tad premature to give Paolo Bacigalupi all these accolades? Because, frankly, "The Drowned Cities" is a far superior novel in comparison and, I guess, it is hard to expect similar acknowledgment of it, even if it is deserved? It appears, most of these awards are given once and the awarded authors are then promptly ignored? I wouldn't want this novel to be overlooked.

"The Drowned Cities" is a completely different story from "Ship Breaker." Paolo's intent for "Ship Breaker" was to write a boy book, with action, adventure and explosions, and with a little bit of a moral lesson about bravery and loyalty. But I doubt "The Drowned Cities" was written with the same agenda in mind. Or if it was, the final novel far exceeded its original intent. "The Drowned Cities" is a heavy, brutal, unequivocally message-driven story that no one will dismiss as a simple entertainment.

This is a story of war. The kind of war that is playing out in many parts of our world right now. The setting of "The Drowned Cities" is futuristic/dystopian (slightly post-apocalyptic?) - natural resources are scarce, global warming has caused a climate change and extensive flooding of many parts of the planet, US is torn by civil war the reasons for which no one can any longer remember, China is a mega power that attempts to act as a peacekeeper, there are genetically augmented "people" who do rich men's bidding in all spheres of life from war combat to sexual services (this later "sphere" is not actually written into this YA novel, but a part of the larger "The Windup Girl" universe). But there is nothing in this fictional world that, on a human level, is not already happening in reality. And what is happening is that people are murdering each other for no good reason, children are being recruited to advance various war lords' convoluted political and financial agendas, livelihoods are being destroyed and citizens killed and exploited by the same soldiers who claim to protect and serve them.

Bacigalupi writes about many war-related things in this novel - the futility of peacekeeping efforts, the pointlessness of civil wars. It raises questions of what should one do in a time of war - fight and spread violence? endure and survive at any cost, even by sacrificing one's humanity? or try to simply escape? But the major theme of "The Drowned Cities," in my mind, is the place of children in war. They are its victims, they are its bloody players, they are its survivors. The part of the story that struck me the most is the portrayal of the evolution (or birth) of a child soldier. This novel is awfully reminiscent of Ishmael Beah's personal account of becoming a boy soldier. It is astonishing how easy it is to dehumanize a child and make him (or her) a senseless torturer and killer.

Reading "The Drowned Cities" was an immensely intense experience for me. Every time I put the book down and came back to it later, it only took me a few pages to put me again and again into a high level of anxiety and fear for its characters. Not many YA books can keep me in suspense these days, but "The Drowned Cities" did. With that said, I want to assure you, the book never becomes a tearjerker or tragedy porn or shocking for the shock's sake. It is an honest, real and raw portrayal of what happens every day in the countries we don't care and don't want to think about.

If "Mockingjay" or Chaos Walking Trilogy are your favorite reads, "The Drowned Cities" is your next natural reading choice.

An incredible book, from start to finish!
By Amanda Welling
First Impressions: Paolo Bacigalupi's novel, Ship Breaker, was incredible! For anyone who has not already read the book, you are totally missing out! The Drowned Cities was high on my list of must-reads for this year since I loved the first book so much. This author has an amazing talent and I knew that he would be able to write a wonderful companion novel to Ship Breaker. I have to say that I think I like the cover art more on this book as well. Paolo really takes the dystopian genre to a whole new level!

First 50 Pages: I would be hesitant to suggest reading The Drowned Cities to a younger reader. This book like the last is dark and gritty all the way around. The setting is dark, there is some cursing and drug use, the characters are highly flawed, and there are some sexual bits thrown in for good measure. So if any of those things make you feel uncomfortable, you may want to pass on reading this book. However, what I love about this book is that it is plausible and the hope for the characters isn't completely lost even though the conditions everyone faces are extremely drab. You don't have to look very far to find all of the good messages this book contains.

Paolo's writing is fabulous as usual in The Drowned Cities, which for me, was expected. The pacing of the book seemed to run well, although I think that this book had much more action then the last. Just know that the author doesn't hold back when describing anything, so you get all of the dirty little details about everything gruesome and disgusting. I also think that both genders will love this book, as well as adult readers. I know that once I picked it up, it was so difficult to put back down. A lot of people felt that the first book was more geared towards boys, but I disagree. Girls like lots of action too!

Characters & Plot: The Drowned Cities takes place in an area that was formally known as Washington, DC and has two main characters, orphans Mahlia and Mouse. Washington, DC is hardly recognizable and it is one of the best aspects of this novel. The way that the author describes everything in great detail really makes the story come alive.

Mahlia is the daughter of a peacekeeper. When the peacekeepers came to the United States to try to end the civil war, they eventually abandoned the country and their attempt at peace failed. Mahlia ended up captured by a group called the Army of God who cut off one of her hands. Luckily for Mahlia, before this group could do any more damage to her, a boy named Mouse comes and rescues her. I was instantly able to connect with Mahlia and I felt horrible for her because of everything that she had to go through in order to survive.

Mouse is a boy whose parents died in the war and takes Mahlia into a refugee camp after her capture. If that wasn't interesting enough, things become even more intense when the United Patriot Front show up to track down a human called Tool, who had been genetically advanced to become the perfect solider. Tool is indeed around the area and after a battle with the soldiers (who are all basically teens), Mahlia and Mouse take him under their wings because he is wounded. What happens next is a wild ride through the jungles of the Drowned Cities with a ton of action, and of course, more guts and gore.

Tool is the only character from Ship Breaker that shows up in The Drowned Cities, which is awesome because that means you really don't have to read Ship Breaker in order to understand what happens in this book, although the first book is really good, so you should read it before this one. One thing that I appreciated overall was the way each character changes from the beginning of the book until the end. Mouse makes the most obvious changes in my opinion. He wasn't my favorite character at first, but he was by the ending.

Final Thoughts: War takes center stage in The Drowned Cities and this book is sure to make you sit up and think about what you read long after you have finished reading. The effects of war, especially on children, are a major theme that runs through this story. War can make people change into something that they never thought they could be and morals can become questionable. Everything that you thought about how the world works becomes turned upside down. The war aspect of this book felt very real to me in a very creepy and powerful way.

I can't really recommend reading this book enough. It was superb and quite frankly, it was one of the most powerful and thought-provoking novels I have read ever. I foresee grand things in store for this author in the future!

uncomfortably real, and completely riveting
By Tabitha
Wow. Few authors can blow me away like Bacigalupi can. After I finished this book, I had to just sort of sit there catching my breath (I felt the same way after finishing Ship Breaker). Bacigalupi can *go there* like no other YA author I've read.

This book is brutal and no punches are pulled, but not in a gratuitous way. The violence is real and believable and absolutely necessary to the story. Actually, it IS the story.

This is a companion novel to Ship Breaker: America is no longer, and the east-central region is rife with civil war. There are several factions fighting for control, each calling themselves true patriots, but are really just warlords seeking power. Everything about it reminds me of certain areas of Africa, which made it real and extremely uncomfortable, and yet I couldn't stop reading.

Mahlia and Mouse have grown up in the Drowned Cities, which is the Washington D.C. area. They knew a short time of Peace when China intervenes in an attempt to end the fighting (and this reminds me of the Middle East). In the end, though, China pulls out and the fighting resumes as though it had never stopped. Ten years isn't long enough to erase animosity and hatred, real or imagined. Any semblance of peace is shattered, and soldiers go where they please, take whatever they want in the name of patriotism, and leave a path of destruction behind them. Mahlia and Mouse learned how to stay out of the soldiers' paths, but then Tool enters their lives.

Tool is the only character from Ship Breaker--half man, half animal hybrid of dog, hyena, tiger, and a few other predators. He was built with one purpose in mind, to fight in a war. Mahlia and Tool find an unlikely alliance, and the story delves into themes of loyalty, friendship, family, and being forced into all of the above--like kidnapped children in Africa being forced to fight in a warlord's army. This is explored in full detail, along with the horrors of war, and my heart broke for Mahlia and Mouse.

At the same time, I cheered for Tool. In Ship Breaker, he discovers himself as an individual, which goes against his breeding and genetic engineering. In Drowned Cities, Tool discovers that he can have a purpose. He has an amazing revelation: "I have never been defeated, but have I ever won anything?" That really illustrates the difference between avoiding what you don't want and going after what you do want. Tool is such a fantastic character, and I can't wait to see what he'll do next. I am wondering if absolute power will corrupt absolutely.

If violence or war isn't your thing, then you won't enjoy Drowned Cities. But if you like stories with vast amounts of depth and emotion, then it's definitely for you. Definitely recommended. To get the full effect of Tool as a character, you should read Ship Breaker first. However, this book can be read on its own.

Age appropriateness: the realities of war are up front and center in this book, so it might be too much for younger teens.

Leaf Man, by Lois Ehlert

Fall has come, the wind is gusting, and Leaf Man is on the move. Is he drifting east, over the marsh and ducks and geese? Or is he heading west, above the orchards, prairie meadows, and spotted cows? No one's quite sure, but this much is certain: A Leaf Man's got to go where the wind blows.

With illustrations made from actual fall leaves and die-cut pages on every spread that reveal gorgeous landscape vistas, here is a playful, whimsical, and evocative book that celebrates the natural world and the rich imaginative life of children.

Includes an author's note and leaf-identifying labels.

From Publishers Weekly
Ehlert (Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf) returns to one of her favorite themes—the rainbow beauty of autumn leaves—for this refreshing riff on leaf peeping and collecting. A narrator recalls the Leaf Man that used to live nearby but recently blew away with the wind. "He left no travel plans." From that breezy beginning, the narrator imagines the different flight patterns the Leaf Man may have followed "past the chickens, toward the marsh,... over the prairie meadows,... past the spotted cows," and punctuates the lyrical text with an occasional refrain ( "a Leaf Man's got to go where the wind blows"). All the while, Ehlert sparks her foliage flight of fancy with her snazzy leaf collages. Fiery maple, brown mottled catalpa and bright yellow ginko leaves take the shape of various animals and objects on each spread. The boldly colored background papers, of varying texture, make the leaves pop. And, in the type of clever book design for which Ehlert is known, the pages are die-cut and/or patchworked at the top to create a rolling, flowing effect throughout. Endpapers serve as a labeled field guide to leaf varieties and an author's note expresses Ehlert's passion for her subject, and describes her art technique. After this visual feast, young nature lovers are sure to look with fresh eyes as they walk through the woods. Ages 4-8. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 3–Ehlert combines vivid collage artwork, effulgent colors, and an inventive design to create an eye-catching picture book. With a body made of fallen leaves and acorns for eyes, Leaf Man takes off from a backyard and flutters away on the breeze, meandering past animals, over fields of fall vegetables, above waterways, and across prairie meadows. The text suggests a range of possible destinations, along with the refrain, Well, a Leaf Man's got to go where the wind blows. Finally, readers are encouraged to listen for a rustle in the leaves and maybe find a Leaf Man of their own to take home. From ducks to pumpkins to fish, all of the objects described are fashioned out of life-size leaves of various shapes, sizes, and hues and set against backgrounds of textured paper. The die-cut pages curve and bend across the top edge, suggesting undulating mountains set against a sky-blue backdrop. The various leaves and seeds are identified on the endpapers. While the story is simple, the artwork is dazzling, and the book's concept will inspire nature walks, art projects, and curiosity about the changing seasons.–Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal

From Booklist
*Starred Review* PreS-Gr. 2. Ehlert's imaginative way with picture books in general and those of the natural world in particular continues with this eye-popping book that follows one bold maple leaf with acorn eyes as the wind blows it here and there. In a brief author's note, Ehlert describes how she picks up leaves wherever she goes. She uses them--gathered from oaks, hawthorns, elms, beeches, and more--to great affect here, cleverly shaping them into the many animals and objects the leaf flies over: chickens, fruits and vegetables and lakes, fish, and rivers. Hints of whimsy are cleverly incorporated in the figures (the tips of a maple leaf form a cow's udder), and scalloped edgings on the tops of the pages, cut at varying heights, artfully give the effect of setting the action against a three-dimensional landscape. There is no real story here, but the book can easily translate into a guessing game, as young eyes pick out the slightly camouflaged shapes. The bright colors and distinctive shapes will make it a pleasure for children to do just that. Ilene Cooper

What fun! So much to see!
By Corinne H. Smith
This book is getting good reviews for good reason. Lois Ehlert uses images of actual autumn leaves to tell a simple story. And yet, it's not that simple. In each colorful double-page spread, the leaves are arranged in order to form figures: a man, barnyard animals, farm crops, etc., whatever supports the text. As we advance through the story, we realize something different about the book. The top edges of the pages aren't cut straight; they swoop to become horizon lines that change with each page turn, simulating the colorful rolling hills of autumn. What a wonderful surprise! Who would have thought of that technique? It's perfect for the story. The leaves are close at hand, and yet your eye catches the distant landscape, just as it might in real life.

What I like most about this book is that it is educational in a subtle way. It doesn't scream, "Here are leaf projects for you to try!" It merely tells a story using leaves, and lets the readers become inspired to gather up and create leaf creatures of their own. In other words, teaching and leading by example. On the end-sheet of the front and back covers, sample leaves are each identified by tree name -- again, with subtlety. If you want to know the names of the trees they came from, fine, there they are. If you are too young (or too old!) to care, then the words do not intrude on your view of the leaves or the enjoyment of the book. I can see that reading this book to a group of observant youngsters would take quite a while. There's so much to see, and you might not catch it all the first time through. "Leaf Man" requires multiple readings.

This is a beautiful, educational picture book that will appeal to all ages. It should be mandatory for nature center libraries and elementary school libraries.

Intuitive Eating, by Evelyn Tribole, Elyse Resch

First published in 1995, Intuitive Eating has become the go-to book on rebuilding a healthy body image and making peace with food. We've all been there―angry with ourselves for overeating, for our lack of willpower, for failing at yet another diet. But the problem is not us; it's that dieting, with its emphasis on rules and regulations, has stopped us from listening to our bodies. Written by two prominent nutritionists, Intuitive Eating will teach you:

• How to reject diet mentality forever

• How our three Eating Personalities define our eating difficulties

• How to find satisfaction in your eating

• How to feel your feelings without using food

• How to honor hunger and feel fullness

• How to follow the ten principles of "Intuitive Eating",

• How to achieve a new and safe relationship with food and, ultimately, your body

• How to raise an "intuitive eater"–NEW!

• The incredible science behind intuitive eating–NEW!

This revised edition includes updates and expansions throughout, as well as two brand new chapters that will help readers integrate intuitive eating even more fully into their daily lives.

A Common Sense Approach for Everyone!
By MizB
Intuitive Eating encompasses ten principles, but the main three (3) keys are these:

* Unconditional permission to eat when hungry and what food is desired
* Eating for physical rather than emotional reasons
* Reliance on internal hunger and satiety cues to determine when and how much to eat

I have been a big fan & promoter of this method since I first heard about it in 2005. Using its principles, I lost twenty-five pounds in six months while eating my favorite things (chocolate, ice cream, cheeseburgers, pizza, etc).

In this latest edition of the book, the authors have removed many of the numbers that were in the previous edition (stats, weights, heights) because they believe that it leads to self-sabotage when these are the focus. They have also added two new chapters -- one that gives scientific backing to prove that IE works, and the other that focuses on how to help children and teens become Intuitive Eaters.

The chapter on kids was actually very interesting to me, as I have two of my own (ages 11 & 14), one of which is very rebellious in regards to food -- he loves chips & ice cream, and it worries me that he's learning all of my own bad habits. The authors insist, though, that letting kids make their own decisions regarding food (how much, what kinds, etc) is the best method because they will intuitively get in the balanced nutrition they need, if they're left alone. It's when an issue is made of their eating habits or their weight that they start to rebel, and/or lose faith in their ability to trust their internal cues.

One thing that surprised me about this new edition was the constant reminder of how it's important to put weight loss on the back burner in the beginning of this process. The reason for this is that, if you're focused on losing weight -- as opposed to just learning how to become an Intuitive Eater -- you will sabotage yourself by either getting depressed over the slowness of your weight loss progress, or by seeking out other diets in hopes of quicker results.

Here are some quotes from the book that I found helpful (some of which I forgot to write the page number references for):

* bring peace to your eating life and body image (p.32)
* focus on weight loss MUST be put on the back burner while you learn to return to Intuitive Eating
* If you allow even one small hope to linger that a new and better diet might be lurking around the corner, it will prevent you from being free to rediscover Intuitive Eating (chp.1)
* undereating leads to overeating
* you can't fail at IE -- it's a learning process at every point along the way (p.53)
* the more you practice, the more confidence you'll have (p.86)
* focus on continual change and learning, and start thinking in terms of what you can learn along the way (p.119)
* pause in the middle of eating to gauge your hunger level, and to ask yourself how the food tastes
* give yourself permission to eat again when you get hungry
* if you start eating when you're not hungry, it's hard to know when to stop from satiety (p.128)
* slow down while eating
* It's what you eat consistently, over time, that matters -- progress, not perfection...
* Intuitive Eating means having no guilt in your eating (p.301)

Lastly, there is a chapter on eating disorders, too, and how those caught in the throes of one can seek help, and also learn to eat intuitively.

Overall, I most highly recommend this book, and this method. It is very much based on common sense, and we all know that dieting doesn't work in the long run, anyway. This method is great because you can still eat what you love, you can eat out at restaurants without worrying about blowing your `diet', and you can lose the craziness of obsessing over what food is "good/bad".

Reinventing my relationship with food and loving it
By D.M.C.
It must have been fate or divine intervention, but this book came at the perfect time for me. I had pre-ordered the 3rd edition of the book months before (waiting on the new chapter on teaching children intuitive eating), forgot I had ordered it, and in the mean time went on my usual roller coaster of dieting then overeating and gained and lost the same 5-10 lbs. I had just started a protein only diet to lose those 10 lbs again and was MISERABLE when this book arrived in the mail. I stopped my diet immediately and devoured the book in a couple days. After only a week with this book, I can already tell it will be a lifesaver for me.

It made me realize the reasons why I am overeating, which has helped me stop the cycle more than any diet rule ever has. I also am learning to enjoy my food and really savor it, leading me to eat less. I have also started exercising again, but more gentle and enjoyable exercise than when I was dieting. My biggest accomplishment so far was when I made a batch of real chocolate chip cookies, savored ONE, and felt truly satisfied. Before I would have either eaten the entire batch in a day or would not have made them at all and use substitutes that never really met the craving (leading me to over eat the cookies whenever I got my hands on them). I am still early in the process, but I can already see that this will be a healthy, balanced and enjoyable way to eat for the rest of my life.

I am starting to incorporate the chapter on intuitive eating for children (I have two preschoolers). It is scary letting my kids have what they want, I have been controlling their food intake and limiting sweets since they were born. I think this process will be harder than the work on myself. But I know it will be worth it in the end.

Amazon.com Review
Q&A with Norman Warren, author of "Business Intelligence in Microsoft SharePoint 2013"

Q. Why is your book timely-- what makes it important right now?

A. Our book can be considered a quick guide to getting value from Big Data. Why? Because much of the focus is on Excel and the business intelligence tools that are now baked into it. Additionally, there is content on how to connect to Hadoop data with Excel. There is no better time to embrace the fact that Excel is the preferred tool of choice for analyzing and exploring data. This book provides the keys for getting value from data and sharing discovered insights in SharePoint 2013.

The tools that Microsoft provides are less expensive, integrate more easily in the corporate datacenter, and are accessible to mainstream information workers and developers, using the skills they already have.

Q. What information do you hope that readers of your book will walk away with?

A. 1. A quick tour with exercises for using new BI features in Excel 203 and Visio 2013 and then how to get the most from SQL Server 2012 tabular and SharePoint 2013 when implementing self-service and enterprise BI solutions.

2. A clear understanding of what business intelligence is. Also, an understanding of what Big Data is, its role in surfacing insights, and how to use Microsoft BI tools to get value from it.

3. Useful instruction on which tool to use. Customers often ask which tools they should use when trying to select among a variety of Microsoft offerings. They’re often confused and need information as to why they might want to prefer SQL Server Reporting Services in SharePoint over PerformancePoint Services, or why they might use the Excel 2013 PowerPivot add-in instead of Excel or Excel Services. After all, each product connects to a database and surfaces data from an OLAP cube.

4. A better understanding on how to get to trusted data and the shortened life cycle of BI implementation while using the latest Microsoft BI tools.

Q. What's the most exciting and/or important thing happening in your space?

A. Managed and guided self-service BI works. People don't have to wait on IT to get a report. This book gives tips for successfully implementing self-service BI with tools like Excel 2013 and Visio 2013.

Big Data is here to stay and you can learn what it is and how to get value from the huge data store immediately by using tools discussed in this book.

Buy the Kindle Edition - I bought 20
By Frank Bergdoll
Using this as a reference text for a class in BI. The lab set-up in Appendix A was a challenge for the students, but I was able to build the VM environment with a little additional work and give it to them.

Kindle Edition has screenshots in colour - which addresses the concern some reviewers have.

The first two chapters are a bit basic - and benefit from being supplemented by additional resources (Kimball books).

Students really enjoyed how this fit their program and synthesized several concepts in practical application.

Another MS Press title rushed to press
By Russell Ramirez
The first problem I had with this book was with the illustrations. Some of the screen captures are OK, but others look like they were printed in color, then scanned in B/W. Just to put what you will see into words, quite a few of the images look as if the image was printed on a laser printer that was low on toner.

The book includes information on some very recently announced features such as native PowerView in Excel 2013. This is a good thing, but it also seems like another clue that the book was probably rushed to press.

Lastly, there are step by step examples that are mostly correct, but there were probably last minute changes in the most recent code updates such as function shifted from just the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) moniker, to include SSDT - Business Intelligence for VS 2012. A minor point that happens quite a bit with the first books to be released on a technology subject.

I gave this book an OK rating because it could have, and should have, been better but think the fault rests with the publisher and not the authors.

As others have noted, various diagrams and illustrations are not well introduced in the hardcopy version (and I suspect the Kindle equivalents may be worse). However, I don't find this a show-stopper: the book is a good, quick, introduction to designing and developing BI tools using the current SP 2013 release. If possible, find a paper copy and l
