About the Author
Gary White holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition from Michigan State University. At his retirement in 1994 he was Distinguished Professor of Music at Iowa State University, where he developed and administered the music theory curriculum and established the electronic and computer music studio. For a number of years he was also in charge of music listening courses for the general student at Iowa State. Dr. White is the composer of over fifty published musical compositions and the author of Music First! (a music fundamentals textbook) and Instrumental Arranging (a textbook for orchestration and arranging), both published by McGraw-Hill. He has been awarded the U.C. Berkeley Medal by the University of California at Berkeley, was named a National Arts Associate by Sigma Alpha Iota, and has held a MacDowell Colony Fellowship. His compositions have won many prizes and awards, including the Toon van Balkom Prize and the Shenandoah/Percussion Plus Prize.

Be wary of used copies.

This is a textbook AND workbook. There are perforated assignment pages which are intended to be torn out. Used copies might have these pages missing, so be warned! If you buy a used copy, make sure all the pages are intact and the assignment pages are not filled in. Also, this book should include a foldout keyboard and chord finder.

A good book, but WAYYYYYY overpriced

We're using this book in an entry level music theory type of course. It's a good book, it covers the topics well, has lots of examples, is laid out well to be a good reference later, and has lots of very helpful exercises. In short, it's a very good book for learning how to read and write music, and some basics about theory.

The only downside is, omg, this may be the most overpriced book I've ever seen. It's a pretty thin book with a cheap soft cover binding. When you look at the book it is something I would expect to sell for $20 or so. Certainly not 5x that.

Reasonably good, if the price was $60 cheaper

I'm a college music professor and have used this as the primary text in my music fundamentals course since the 4th Edition. It is well-written with many useful examples. Editions 4 and 5 were SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper.

Pros:
Covers all the important fundamental bases.
Explains things clearly, easy to understand even for beginners.

Cons
While 50% of the practice exercises are useful, the other are rather annoying and more confusing than helpful (IMHO).
About as overpriced as a 12 square-foot apartment in upper Manhattan.

Look, I know publishers are out to make a profit, as well they should be. No one here is begrudging good, old-fashioned business success. But let's keep it real. Everyone knows college textbooks are ludicrously priced to begin with but the publisher of THIS little book brings it to a level that is obscene. This is a THIN PAPERBACK WITH PERFORATED TEAR-OUT PAGES. They would make a handsome profit selling this book for $40. Anything over $60 is indefensible, but $100??? That's just absurd. As such I have determined I will never use this book for my classes again, unless the price is slashed by a minimum of 50%.

Bottom line; there are many quality music fundamental resources out there, a great deal of which are much less expensive.

Concise, Interesting, Useful

An early and interesting book from the distinguished historian Peter Gay. This book is a concise discussion of the life and thought of Eduard Bernstein, the originator of Revisionist socialism. In addition to its nice coverage of Bernstein, this book is useful for understanding the history of the great German Social Democratic Party (SPD). The book is divided into 3 sections. Gay opens with a concise narrative of Bernstein's life up the development of Revisionism. Born into an assimilated Jewish family, Bernstein came from a modest background and became involved in the socialist movement at a young age. He became a prominent figure in one of the major German socialist groups, had to go into exile during Bismarck's persecution of the Socialists, and spent prolonged sojourns in Switzerland and England. In exile, he became the editor of the chief Socialist paper and an even more important figure in the SPD. Bernstein was an adherent of Marx and was personally close to Engels. He played a significant role in the Marxist orientation of the SPD. In the 1890s, however, general prosperity and the success of the SPD in German politics falsified a number of Marx's predictions. Bernstein set out to provide a more realistic doctrine for German socialism.

The middle of the book is devoted to a discussion of Revisionism. This includes a brief sketch of the Marxist background, a nice exposition of Bernstein's doctrines, a thoughtful discussion of the social background of Revisionism, and the reception of Revisionism in the German socialist movement. Revisionism involved abandonment of Marx's Hegelianism, including his model of history, a highly modified view of capitalism, and a strong commitment to democratic reformism and avoidance of revolutionary violence. As Gay points out, Revisionism fit well into the evolution of the Socialist movement because of the relative success of socialist trade unions and the SPD as a political force. Bernstein's ideas, nonetheless, were a source of considerable controversy and Bernstein became alienated from a number of his former friends.

The final section of the book is a concise narrative of Bernstein's later career and the history of the SPD during and after WWI. This covers the decision of the SPD to support the Reich government in the war, the great party schism, and Bernstein's principled dissent. While Bernstein did initially support the party consensus, he subsequently made the courageous decision to leave the party and dissent from the war. After the war, he was an outspoken critic who stressed German culpability for starting the war. Even after he rejoined the party and was re-elected to the Reichstag, he was a marginal figure in the party. Bernstein was equally vocal in denouncing the Bolsheviks (as was his old friend, the more orthodox Marxist Karl Kautsky). Bernstein was born just after the failed 1848 revolutions and died a few months prior to Hitler's accession to power. His life captures a great deal of the history of socialism in Germany.

Good work

Peter Gay's works on German history are always very much worth reading, and I found his early study on Eduard Bernstein useful as well. The book deals with Bernstein's life and thinking, with latter chapters focusing on reformist socialism. Now Bernstein's original works on reformism can be somewhat difficult, which is why this book is so valuable to a modern reader. Peter Gay covers the various aspects of Bernstein's theory in a clear manner without any ideological distortions, giving readers a good idea of what Bernstein was all about. The book was written in the 1950s, but as far as I can see it hasn't lost any of its relevancy.

Gerat at what it does!

Unlike The Beer Guide, by Oakes, or the Rate Beers website, both of which rate beers, The Beer Book shows what beers are out there, today, with nice photos. Arranged by brewery in each country, it is easy to find your favorite brew, and see what other beers that brewery is making. Nice piece on glasses as well. A wonderful complement to The Beer Guide and an essential, and up-to-date reference.

Great book, just facinating!

This is a massive collection and visual journey though the world of beers. As a beer lover myself I could not resist purchasing this book.

This encyclopedia, goes through beers alphabetical and by geographic region, there are sampling notes for the top brews each brewing company makes, as well as nice bright photos of each bottle. inside you will fine walking tours for fantastic pubs around the world, as well as a look at the large breweries themselves and the brew masters who work them.

I only wish it could have even more beers, as only the 2 or 3 beers are mentioned for each brewery, though it is already quite a collection.

Also on the front cover of the book where the title is, is a huge coaster! i got a kick out of that when it arrived! though i would not set any beer on that one!

Get it if you like beer, get it for someone who likes beer, you wont regret it, and it will only expand your appreciation for this delicious brew.

Still Worth Picking Up 2 Years Later

This guide has more than just a listing of breweries by country and geographical areas: it has guides on what glassware to use, vignettes on famous breweries, beer tour guides, guides to beer styles, beer and food pairings, etc. Although craft beer is the major focus, the book does not slam major breweries as the collaborators do not want to turn away readers. This helps get more into craft beer! Some breweries have four featured beers and others have two which kind of shows which craft breweries the authors really dig. (or were there space considerations?) Beer geeks will be happy to see craft breweries like 3 Floyds, Russian River, Nogne, Mikkeller, Troegs, Portsmouth, Alesmith, Descutes and others are listed among the hundreds of breweries featured. There is a section in the back for tasting notes. But the book seems more like a coffee table fixture than one I'd carry to the stores, tastings or beer events. The illustrations are bright, vivid, and easy to peruse.
I have to hen peck to list small changes I see needed: put Paulaner in section of German breweries, take Ireland out of "British Isles," add Dark Star to the list of UK breweries, and keep cranking out this book every few years!
