As an inquisitive seven-year-old, Martin Booth found himself with the whole of Hong Kong at his feet when his father was posted there in the early 1950s. Unrestricted by parental control, he had free access to hidden corners of the colony normally closed to a Gweilo, a “pale fellow” like him. Befriending rickshaw coolies and local stallholders, he learned Cantonese, sampled delicacies such as boiled water beetles and one-hundred-year-old eggs, and participated in colourful festivals. He even entered the forbidden Kowloon Walled City, wandered into the secret lair of the Triads and visited an opium den. Along the way he encountered a colourful array of people, from the plink plonk man with his dancing monkey to Nagasaki Jim, a drunken child molester, and the Queen of Kowloon, the crazed tramp who may have been a member of the Romanov family.
Shadowed by the unhappiness of his warring parents, a broad-minded mother who, like her son, was keen to embrace all things Chinese, and a bigoted father who was enraged by his family’s interest in “going native,” Martin Booth’s compelling memoir is a journey into Chinese culture and an extinct colonial way of life that glows with infectious curiosity and humour.

About the Author
Martin Booth was an internationally admired writer and biographer and also an acclaimed novelist: The Industry of Souls was shortlisted for the 1998 Booker Prize. He died in February 2004, shortly after completing Gweilo.

Read this book!!!!

You must read this book. Martin Booth adored Hong Kong and its inhabitants. His view of Hong Kong life in the early 1950's is so clear, so non-judgmental, that you feel you are living those years with him, in the body and mind of a 7-10 year old boy. What a great curiosity, what a deeply compassionate heart this little boy had! I wish Mr. Booth were still alive and that I could meet him. I'd love to hear more of his stories, more of his life, this time in person.

through a childs eyes

I loved this book. I have not been to Hong Kong but it was so descriptive that I was there. I was looking down from the house on the Peak and I lived the fear of the Typhoon. The characters were so real that you could almost talk to them yourself. His mother was an unusual woman for her time but his father was a sad man caught up in the British convention, a man of little spirit who so wanted to be thought of as important. It was a boys own adventure with a moral.

A young English boy lives in Hong Kong. His father is a military buffoon and his loving and attractive mother encourages her son to explore the island, make friends, and welcomes the exposure to an ancient and fascinating culture. He has all kinds of adventures and is a fearless explorer. He absorbs the ever changing scenery at the port and describes the ferocity of the typhoons so well.
It is fresh and funny and spiced with the sexual atmosphere of an international base.
An entertaining read that never flags.
