Best of the best in geochemistry

I am familiar with geochemistry since more than 35 years. Consequently, I certainly know several textbooks in the field. However, when I started to know the William M. White book "Geochemistry" years ago in its e-book format I immediately realized that there is no other equal book in the field. Few weeks ago, I decided to buy its paper printed copy via Amazon. I got it almost the next week, a marvelous text in hand anytime I'd like to consult it. It is rather close to be complete, so I have no hesitation to assign it the highest rating possible. I like its approach, the foundation of its thermodynamic and the kinetic toolboxes before going into the geological details and applications, and in particular I clearly admire its dealing with isotope geochemistry since no modern textbook on geochemistry would be interesting if it did not deal with environmental stable and radiogenic isotopes involvement in geology and the environment. I strongly recommend this book to all serious students, professors and research workers in environmental sciences, geology, water resources, chemistry, thermodynamics, isotope hydrology and geochemistry and for sure to those who are permanently involved with the practical geochemistry studies and the associated engineering / environmental problems. A great book indeed, I love it, I keep it all the time close to my work desk and at home. It is difficult to find any other comprehensive book that covers its field in its successful, its unique way, its high-standard quality, and the information this book provides.

Geochemistry by William White is an excelent review of the main themes in geochemistry. It is quite complete and goes through the different subjects with very clear and consistent expositions. As a geochemistry professor for more than 30 years I do recommend this book.

Hate the typos in math expressions

I have Just read the first chapter. So far the content of the book is excellent, rigorous yet clear, however, my major complain is that there are so many typos in the mathematical symbols and equations, such as lower case vs. upper case, subscript/superscript and hat/overbar,. Considering this book is quite mathematically-sophisticated, these typos make the reading sometimes confusing.

Poorly written marketing brochure with pointless "cases".

I wanted to find new inspiration and methodology but instead I got a poorly written marketing brochure of 278 pages. The book offers no real insights and lists cases but misses digging deeper and explaining its rationale for the cases.
I personally recommend blue ocean strategy or books by IDEO and Illinois institute.

A brilliant explanation of what orbit-shifting innovation is and how to make it happen

An orbit-shifting innovation is among the most disruptive. As Rajiv Narang and Devika Devaiah explain, it happens "when an area that needs transformation meets an innovator with the will and the desire to create, and not follow history. At the heart of an orbit-shifting innovation is the breakthrough that creates a new orbit and achieves a transformative impact." Narang and Devaiah thoroughly examine the entire process, from initial insight to fulfillment and refinement.

They pose a question of special importance to me: "What are the real dynamics of executing an orbit-shifting innovation with as much focus as it takes to conceive it?" This book is their collaborative response to that question and duly acknowledge the valued assistance of their colleagues at Erehwon, a 20-year-old pioneering innovation firm.

So what drives their insights concerning orbit-shifting? They suggest three powerful sources: Hundreds of breakthrough innovation missions in which they have been involved thus far, leadership mindsets that they have studied for more than two decades of working with senior management teams, and direct experience with more than 100 "orbit shifters" that they have identified thus far. In other words, the information, insights, and counsel they provide is experience-driven, evidence-driven, and anchored in real-world business experience, theirs and others'.

They carefully organize and present their material as follows:

Part 1: Orbit shifts that created history
Part 2: Seeding orbit-shifting innovation
Part 3: Combating dilution in execution
Part 4: Leading orbit-shifting innovation

I agree with Narang and Devaiah that the most valuable insights, those that lead to breakthroughs, do not emerge during a process to generate as many ideas as possible; innovation does not equal ideation. Rather, innovation emerges as boundaries are identified. "This book surfaces our painful realization that most big ideas don't get killed; they just get diluted." That is to say, big ideas are reduced in terms of their potential value and impact.

By nature, orbit-shifts involve significant change. There are always barriers to such change and often cultural in nature, the result of what James O'Toole so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." That is to say, big ideas are reduced in terms of their potential threat to the status quo and its defenders.

More often than not, Narang and Devaiah suggest, executing a breakthrough insight is more difficult than formulating it. They also stress the importance of an "out of the box challenge" that requires thinking beyond the given "box" or context. Only then can an orbit-shifting idea be generated.

Over the years, I have been retained to assist with hundreds of innovation initiatives and, with rare exception, the greatest challenge to those involved was to think innovatively about innovation. This is what Albert Einstein had in mind when asserting that problems can't be solved with the same thinking that created them.

Innovative thinking should be sustained in any organization, whatever its size and nature may be, and at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise. I agree with Narang and Devaiah that this process is best viewed as a never-ending journey - a series of orbit-shifting projects -- rather than limited to any one of them. If a workplace environment is thought of as a greenhouse, potentially big ideas are seedlings that must be carefully nourished...and protected.

When concluding their book, Rajiv Narang and Devika Devaiah observe, "Whether in fiction or reality, the most enduring stories, the ones that excite us the most, are thee ones of orbit shifters, where ordinary people achieve the extraordinary. Where they create history, rather than follow it. Where they show us that there are no impossible dreams or problems, only limited dreamers and problem solvers."

Through human history, there have been thousands of breakthrough ideas and that process will continue in months and years to come. New dreams will pose exciting new opportunities and new problems will present exciting new challenges. We would be well-advised, meanwhile, to keep in mind an astute observation by Richard Dawkins: "Yesterday's dangerous idea is today's orthodoxy and tomorrow's clich�."

Very Thought Provoking Discussion

This is an incredibly dense book that reads more like a textbook so if you're expecting light, motivational business ideas this is not for you. It is also unfortunately printed in rather small text which is packed onto the page with very small margins which can quickly lead to a loss of focus for the reader. Thankfully the chapters are split into smaller sections so it is relatively easy to find your place again when you pause and then pick the book back up.

If you ignore the book's physical shortcomings this is a very thought provoking discussion of innovation and what it means for people and business. It covers topics ranging from healthcare to technology and provides numerous examples of innovation in the world.

If you can keep your focus through the many challenges to reading that this book presents it's really a very good read and well worth the time investment.

Highly recommended

I read the author's book Into Thin Air and liked his writing. I saw that he had written this book about Pat Tillman. I followed Pat's professional football career ... and the entire story via news reports of his enlistment and death in Afghanistan. The writing is top notch. The story is heroic. And tragic. A good read ... I highly recommend it.

Perfect for preparing for the test!

I bought this book to study for the TOEIC speaking & writing test. There are 2 chapters for each type of question like speaking test has 6 types of questions so there are 12 chapters for speaking section. First I thought it would explain something too easy and something I already knew. But, as you go to more difficult/complex questions, it has a lot of good points and tactics. You can learn how to answer each question!
Audio CDs are good for listening to the speaking questions in advance for the test but the sample answers were not really useful for me; they seemed so simple and were given a high score answer.
All in all, I recommend this book for people who will take the test, especially people who will take it for the first time.

Not too much comment about the quality/content of the book except for my 5-star mark herein, just one annoying detail about the way CDs sticking in the back. It's too much sticky that I almost broke the disk when trying to take it out as no space to move in/out

interesting setting and dramatic presence, but cardboard characters.

Started out well, with a ritual killing on an island off Northumberland, but the characters had the depth of crepes. The author did a good job of conveying what it's like to live on an island and describing the relationships between different strata of society, but what comes out of the characters mouths is flat at best. Feelings, even when expressed, sound suppressed beyond even British reticence. Author has potential but needs coaching or mentoring to create fully realized characters. I know she sells a lot of books.... but she could reach a larger audience by beefing up her characters.

Picturesque beef cake...

Holy Island is a well written mystery thriller set on a picturesque British Isle. In fact the author describes the setting so well it made me want to visit there, and I actually looked up the place, called Lindisfarne to see if it really existed. (It does).

My only real beef with the book is, well, the beef - in the form of Detective Chief Inspector Maxwell Ryan. The aforementioned DCI Ryan has his own series and this is my very first time delving into it. It quickly becomes very obvious this was written by a woman, with visions of seduction by the world's handsomest detective. DCI Ryan, supposedly also one of the world's greatest detectives, throws every caution to the wind and falls madly for one of the women involved in a series of murders on the tiny island, and this is where I was let down. All appearances of professionalism vanish the second he lays eyes on Anna. If a detective in the real world acted this way he wouldn't be a detective very long and there wouldn't be a series of books. In the process he also overlooks several obvious clues and fails to follow up on obvious details and events. Perhaps due to his distraction?

And since everyone likes to nitpick: 'mini' means anything small - like a mini skirt. 'Mini' as used in this book is a brand of car owned by BMW and must be capitalized - something the author failed to do throughout the book for some strange reason.

In any case, if you can overlook the over the top hyper masculinity, which I thought went out with the bodice ripping women's novels of past decades (and apparently most women can overlook it considering the author's popularity), then it's a pretty good mystery thriller, told rather beautifully. And the twist at the end is completely unexpected, not to mention shocking.

Preposterous and riddled with factual errors

This book can't decide if it wants to be a police procedural, a Harlequin romance, or a Stephen King horror story. The writing is startlingly uneven and riddled with factual errors. It goes along like a perfectly decent murder mystery for a time, but then you hit some jarring error like the tide going out when it needed to be coming in (to cut off access to the tidal island); or the attraction between the two lead characters veers off into ridiculous internal dialogue or bodice-ripping action; or a seemingly decent, sympathetic character is revealed to be a drug-using Satan-worshipper. I began to wonder whether three different authors had alternated sections, challenging each other to find a way to continue the narrative after ever-more-bizarre plot turns. The plot becomes progressively more preposterous as it goes along, generating lots of eye-rolling on the part of this reader, and culminates in a cartoon-ish last-second rescue (on a dark and stormy night!). The mystery is that whole sections are written quite competently, and I have to think that with the help of a good editor, this could have been a dramatically better book.

Good read for designing a complete life

I've gained a lot from Dr. Zimmerman's teachings over the years - conferences, CD's, weekly e-mails, and books. This book in particular is a favorite of mine because it helped me become a more complete person, and it goes beyond theory to a) practical advice to implement concepts and b) motivational stories to encourage you in your journey. If I can sum up this book I would call it a good roadmap for designing a happy, productive life.

A Whole New Mindset!!

If you have any gumption at all--and want to make the most of life--you need to read The Payoff Principle. The author, true to his long list of credentials, was able to give me a whole new outlook and a whole new mindset! He has convinced me that success and fulfillment can be mine--if only I am willing to put forth the effort! I especially liked stories about the author's own life--and examples he uses (of persons both famous and ordinary) to underscore the effectiveness of pointers presented. It's an easy read, and I will be buying extra copies for my children and grandchildren.

Ordered the book knowing that it had to be one of the best. I was not wrong! I ordered the work book at the same time. I have decided to read the book through once and then to read it again and apply the work book. I am just about to finish the book and I can't stop talking about it.
I am thankful that Dr. Zimmerman makes the applications so easy to understand and the fact that (I) am the one that needs to take the first step in making the changes in my life. It is not easy being a forerunner and taking the thumps along the way, but I am so thankful that Dr. Zimmerman has done it and is willing to share the things that he had to endure so that we can pull from his experience and apply them to our lives in work and at home.
A must read!!

Coffee Table Cars

This is a coffee table book, definitely not for the detailed aficionado but perhaps for someone who enjoys cars and reading their stories and looking at their pictures. It is concerned more with speed and performance than with the newer fuel efficient models. The book is divided into; the first automobile to 1920, then the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000 onward, how an engine works, a glossary and an index.

The pictures are beautiful and most all in colour. There are smaller illustrations listing the origin, the engine and top speed and a bit of their history. Then there are specific cars singled out for a larger page display, such as the Model T, Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, and the DeLorean DMC-12.
Those who want an illustrated story of the automobile's history might enjoy this book.

Although the overall quality is okay, the Amazon description fails to mention that this book is predominantly about foreign cars. There is only minimal mention of American cars and the innovations that were made by the domestic brands of the U.S.

Wow, what a great gift for the car enthusiast. It is big, colorful and very detailed about the history of the car. It has images and information about cars I never knew existed. I purchased it as a gift for my father who is a classic car buff, and he loved it! Great value for the price and the big full color images make you want to spend time just reading about all of the different makes and models. I would recommend it for anyone who collects, restores or dreams about the automobile.

Timeless HR Classic - Must Have!

'Human Resources in the 21st Century' is a classic book that deserves to be read by not only HR professionals, but by all business professionals that are engaged in developing, retaining, and nurturing the human capital component of their business and play a critical role in their organization's strategic success.

Extremely well-organized, the book is a collection of essays written by leading HR thought leaders and working professionals. Some of the stand-out essays are as follows:

'Managing for Execution'
'Accommodating Change in the 21st Century'
'Mother's Work Is Never Done: Myths and Facts About Organizational Change'
'Learning via Education and Training'
'Free to Choose'

A timeless axiom about HR and people is that there is a 'war for talent.' As I write this review, there is still a war to recruit talented people within the organization, and developing that talent to the point that employees feel engaged not only with their work, but with the company as a whole (company branding - employer of choice concept), and that employees produce the OUTCOMES desired to add bottom-line value. Strategic HR planning remains "pie in the sky" thoughts for many executives - especially those that feel that HR professionals fall short on implementation and don't have a clue about business objectives. However, serious HR professionals want their "seat at the table" and this book points out many ways in how they can do just that (gain that seat) - by adding value and implementing programs that work and meet the goals and objectives set forth by key business leaders with buy-in from stakeholders.

Training and Development is one area in which this work addresses the issue. There is a delicate mix of providing education opportunities while balancing training events that directly support the organization's goals. I, for one, utilize many of the concepts in this work when advising on developing a successful career plan, which inserts points in which employees feel valued yet the necessary-required training and development events are taking place. One of the most critical elements in training and education is in development for the generic leadership criteria for a job. General Electric is known for it's ELDS 360 degree feedback program and these tools are still poplar. Want to be hit with your boss - review pages 67 - 77 (Leveraging HR) and also read pages 115 - 125 (Learning via Education and Training). Afterwords, see how you can immediately apply both the concepts of formal leadership development and employee development in one breath. Combined, I for one think you will impress your supervisor and she might actually implement your recommendation - be strategic about it and ensure you can implement it.

Another gem is the discussion on globalization. 'Strategic global skills' is a buzzword found in many companies, but what does that mean?! Well it means more than just assimilating into a culture and knowing what behavior is accepted. There is a bottom-line meaning to knowing how to effectively integrate total rewards with an iron-clad career path that sets leadership (or aspiring leadership) on the right path to succeed within their organizations for the long term. How does a monetary and stock incentive play in Asia? Not the same as it does in the U.S. and the book explains why and cues what ideas that HR professionals should be aware (refer to pages 35 - 56; chapters entitled 'Globalization' and 'Understanding Referent Groups and Diversity').

Change Management is perhaps the most exciting part about being a strategic HR professional because of the audacious goals that immediately fill our mind. However, change management is different for each organization. Change management may be incremental changes for someone working at Target, but it may be transformational for someone working at Google. Consistency and culture are components that need to be considered when developing change management strategies and this book covers both areas well. At the very least business professionals should know that change is continuous both externally and internally - just how you change can make all the difference of business success. This book has some sound strategies and brief case studies that should benefit the HR professional in this area ('Convergence of HR,' 'Finding the Missing Link,' and 'Transforming Your HR Department Into a Start-Up Professional Services Firm') are worthy of your time and attention.

In conclusion: This book deserves a revisit if you have already read it and a concentrated read for those that have not. Put it on the shelf and refer to it often.

Note: Despite a 2003 publication date, the principles contained within this book are still relevant in 2008.

Just like Coaching for Leadership, Human Resources in the 21st Century is a MUST read and should be an ACTIVE resource for leading edge HR Professionals and Service Providers who want to (positively) impact people and performance and provide value to the business.

Balancing HR? Reality v Fantasy, Emotional v Economic,

My recent attendence at the HRO conference in New York only substantiated my growing belief that in the absence of strong HR leadership, the United States economy will soon feel the harsh reality of a population isolated and devalued by agressive competition, and incapable of finding the required trust to consolidate and unify to grow security of life in the future.
Above economic value, lies the rewards of emotional value(EQ) being trust in relationship, unconditional love, emotional strength, social esteem, trust in ability, self esteem, social security, creative value, balanced health, and every core competence that a true HR leader should represent.
In choosing to write on HR in the 21st Century, any realistic leader who fails to identify the behavioural implications of an insecure population incapable of identifying a secure future is only seeking recognition for the insecurity they embody. To outsource an individual's cultural life purpose identifies appalling leadership judgements who for an immediate comparitive monetary advantage effectively destroys all hope of realising future growth by growing mistrust and emotional weakness having deserted the real value the workforce creates in the community. In devaluing an employee to a third world equivalent, does the leader realise the employee whose job has disappeared is now incapable of emotionally contributing a purposeful contribution to the community? The same community our children require the freedom to experiment, fantasise and discover essential adult skills while developing physiological security, and after finding personal security, the community adolescents rely on to emotionally rehearse to develop social esteem and value independence, the community selected out of all other communties because of the mutual bond felt with other like minded members who collectively share in the hope of securing a better quality of life in the future.
Civilisations were built on a common premise to share in the rewards of social connection and to develop a secure future. Value was defined by creatively interacting to diversify skills to express specialist value above primary value. Life begins and ends in the community, where happiness is defined in relativity to others, where we emotionally share in identifying with life meaning, and where organisations appeal to community needs to develop flourishing, viable communities to secure customer allegiences and future growth.
Economic value holds no meaning if it fails to add meaning or enhance life in the community. Organisations who have outsourced their workforce to India have effectively committed economic suicide. Agile, socially responsible companies will soon discover the value in appealing to community needs. In realising employees add a distinct character to a community's culture, and encourages value growth in a specialist set of skills and emotional associations. When combined and shared with other specialist skills, the developed value supports community growth and wealth far beyond a productive, materialist value.
Civilisations defined the human ability to emotionally identify and cooperate for social value. If we cannot share in the experience of creating and defining life in the community then we will never realise life rewards. To feel insecure in one's community is to merely exist. A community without purpose feels the stress associated with cultural insecurity and social anxiety. Globalisation has disconnected communities from recognising and developing the security of a purposeful future. Economic Man has fractured and disabled the only means of securing future growth. Without sharing value amongst the community, the value of accumulated wealth is but a mere fantasy in the bank account of the beholder who is effectively hoarding dead value.
Strong leadership needs to show a willingness to cast a realistic view on what the objective purpose of Globalisation is, and what will define the end of the outward flow of jobs. HR's failure to define the significance of cultural purpose on developing human value and the need to actively create security of life is the fundamental cause of every problem in our world today. Cultural insecurity is felt by every person and leader who fails to actively work to secure a meaningful life in the future.
In omitting behavioural value, emotional intelligence and personal development, this book is only fit for the Artifically Intelligent transactional HR type who typically disrupt the development of strategic value. The independent creative value of transformational HR leadership is the one asset in short supply in a world built on conformist views who cannot express true value.
