THE book

When I was about twelve. I had a mentor--a magician and locksmith named Terry Roses. Terry was a very good magician and I would spend all my time at his locksmith shop. He owned a remarkable collection of stuff, hundreds of locks and handcuffs and a very fine copy of the original edition of this book. It was very hard to get and was rumored that Disney had all the copies. Later I was able to shoot film of a copy found in the CSULB library and then bought my first copy of this Dover reprint.
This is an amazing book. You can see how they did things in the early 20th century across a broad range of theatrical illusion (including tricks of the mediums and stage illusion for the opera) All the secrets are in this one. It was very controversial at the time because Hopkins (a very fine illustrator and engraver for Scientific American) wasn't really a magician. The current thought on the matter is that this is really the work of one Billy Robinson, extraordinary magician, inventor and known to the world as Chung Ling Soo.
Terry has long since left the area, but we keep in touch. I currently have two softbound copies of this book, one loaned out to my tiny assistant (story for another day) and I have also read the full size hardback copy in the Magic Castle library. If you love magic, get a copy of this book. It's a gold mine.

Interesting, Surprising and Very Informative

I am trying my hand at writing a novel set in the late 1800s and wanted some information about the illusions and magic acts of the time. So this book was bought as a reference text.
The writing is clear, and the plentiful illustrations clarify points that can be hard to explain with words. I would look up a particular illusion then find myself reading on to the next illusion, fascinated. There was also some great information on magicians of the era.
The book is divided into sections, by type of illusion. So if you want to know about vanishing acts, you look up that section. If you want to look up sleight of hand, there is a section for that. There is also a very comprehensive, very useful index at the back.
What a creative bunch magicians are! I played a game with myself, reading about an illusion and trying to come up with a way to accomplish it before looking to see how it was done. At first I was totally at a loss, but after a while I started to make a couple of good guesses. Nevertheless, I was still constantly surprised. Some of these tricks just boggle the mind.
If you have a lot of curiosity and enjoy learning unusual facts, you will love this.
