Starred Review. Ankh-Morpork's City Watch Commander, Sam Vimes, stars in the latest entry in Pratchett's popular Discworld series (Going Postal, etc.). "Thud" is the sound that commences the novel, as a dwarf is bludgeoned to death; it's also the name of a chesslike match that recreates the battle of Koom Valley, a long-ago fight between trolls and dwarfs. As the anniversary of the battle approaches, ancient politics and the present-day murder cause tensions between the trolls and dwarfs to boil. Though Koom Valley was a disaster for both sides, certain community leaders from each side have been spoiling for a rematch—something Vimes is duty-bound to prevent. In the midst of this, a push toward affirmative action forces Vimes to hire a vampire named Sally to the Watch. She's sworn off human blood, but that's cold comfort to the assortment of humans, dwarfs, trolls, werewolves and golems that make up the police force. Vimes and his motley crew of coppers are called upon to not only find the murderer and keep the peace but also, in a jab at The Da Vinci Code, solve the riddle of a painting that reputedly holds the secret to what really happened at Koom Valley. Pratchett's fantastic imagination and satirical wit are on full display.

Unwilling to get caught up in the fact that he is the duke of Ankh-Morpork, Commander Vimes still shaves himself and runs the Watch as well as he can. Lord Veternari forces him to get involved in politics, though, because the Watch is incurring serious expense as it grows, and because his multicultural efforts have forced him to hire a vampire as a member of the Watch. Vimes has a lot on his plate, anyway, what with the upcoming anniversary of Koom Valley (a battle between trolls and dwarves that is part of an age-old war), an unsolved murder that reveals the limitations of the Watch in dwarfish eyes, and the theft of a valuable painting from the Royal Art Museum. On top of everything he does as part of his job, he must make it home at six o'clock on the dot every day to read to his young son. Everything is connected, of course--even Sally, the vampire taken on by the Watch. Unsettling secrets are revealed about the true history of Koom Valley, and in a basement in the city, dwarves and trolls are playing the game Thud!, a miniature battle of Koom Valley, together. Always a surprise at every turn

As he states, there is something intrinsically odd about the statement "a narrative novel" and so there is with Thud. Although proceeding in a straight line, it seems it only arrives at its destination through happenstance .

What Possessed Sam Vimes?

Sam Vimes has always been pretty tightly wound. Now the Patrician has forced him to take a vampire into the Watch. Vimes hates vampires; "Not undead enough." There's an nosy auditor snooping around headquarters. And the dwarves and the trolls seem determined to reenact the Battle of Koom Valley in his city. Yeah, it makes you a little tense.
And just when you think it can't get any more tense, someone has murdered the worst of the rabble-rousing dwarves and left a troll club at the murder scene. The dwarves don't regard it as a Watch matter; the murder took place in the new tunnels under Ankh-Morpork. It's dwarf business. Commander Vimes thinks his jurisdiction goes all the way down. The deep dwarves, the ones that won't have anything to do with daylight, are trying to keep Vimes away from the crime scene. It's all gotten political. And Vimes hates politics.
The only time he can really relax is at 6 PM every evening, when he reads Young Sam the boy's favorite story, "Where's My Cow?" Getting home on time sometimes takes a little effort - sometimes it requires the help of the entire Watch - but both of them enjoy the time. Even the animal sound effects.
But the rest of the time it is tense, and Vimes' simmering anger has never been closer to a boil. As the anniversary of Koom Valley approaches, anger is the last thing that Vimes can afford.
Add a mad painter, troll graffiti, amazingly plausible dwarf culture, a troll junkie and four more dwarf murders and you have Pratchett's darkest comedy yet. Pratchett has moved from the comic police procedurals of the early Watch books to something darker and deeper. And much more rewarding. Sure, there's a dwarf named Bashful Bashfullsson, Nobby is dating a stunningly beautiful stripper, and Colon is available for comic relief. But the comedy is only a tool.
Pratchett has never done a better job. From sly send ups of "The Da Vinci Code" to spooky reflections of racism, this is a terrific book.
In every Watch novel the question comes up, "Qui custodiet ipsos custodies?" - "Who watches the watches the watchmen?" All along, Vimes has assured his boss that he, Sam Vimes, does. Now we get to see if that is really true.

Racism - "Heady Stuff Where Brains aren't involved"

The Ankh-Morpork Watch (Police Department) is a microcosm of melting pot society - but under the dictatorial leadership of straight arrow cop Sam Vimes (who has a few prejudices, himself) his cops are not allowed the liberty of separatism. Sally the vampire has to partner with Angua the werewolf (who is having her monthly wolf thing and "struggles with a seething snake's nest of emotions") in the investigation of the murder of a fundamentalist dwarf who "had a beard you could lose a rat in." Unfortunately, a troll appears to be involved - right before the anniversary of a 100,000 years old troll/dwarf battle akin the the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
Ankh Morpork's very future is threatened by a potential civil war.
Endearing characters abound, such as:
Brick, the drugged out troll under suspicion of the murder who doesn't need a lawyer - "I already ate." He undergoes emergency rehabilitation through Vimes' "One-Step Program."
Mr. Pessimal, the snivelling accountant who is auditing the effective utilization of personnel in the Watch (AMPD) becomes deputized by Vimes for an emergency police action. Looking pretty pathetic in AMPD issue chain mail, he steps up to the plate and performs a heroic act, possibly saving Vimes' life. "If he had had enough chest to stick out, it would have been sticking."
Tawnee (Betty), a stripper (dating Nobby, the cop with kleptomaniac tendencies) who was so good looking, guy were too intimidated to ask her out. "Even the way she looked puzzled was unfair to the rest of her sex." Unfortunately, you had to "keep changing the shape of sentences to get them to fit into the currently available space in Tawnee's brain."
Gooseberry, Vimes' Jiminy Cricket type conscience - an imp in a Blackberry-type personal organizer Vimes' wife kept replacing each time he would conveniently lose it.
...and countless others.
Either this TP was easier to read or I'm getting better at it. Enhancing the tightly woven plot are several cameo appearances by the infectious entity "Superstition." Although Pratchett supplies us with his usual outrageous characters, entertaining dialogue, and inventive plot twists, a deep understanding of human nature forms the pervasive undercurrent in this book - immensely entertaining and I highly recommended it.
