In this new addition to the fast-fix diet book shelf, Enig and Fallon attempt to correct what they see as Americans' false belief that tropical fats and oils (such as coconut and palm) are unhealthy, asserting that those fats (and coconut, especially) are beneficial saturated fats that should be more heavily incorporated into our diets. Enig, a biochemist and nutritionist, along with Fallon, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation (a non-profit dedicated to helping people implement healthy approaches to nutrition), say "high-fat, low-carb really works," eschewing the disastrous effects a high-fat diet can have on a person's heart. They like the Atkins diet, but say it doesn't take advantage of the "metabolism-boosting" powers of coconut oil. Their approach skews more toward traditional diets and away from modern diets (e.g., chose animal fats over vegetable oils; raw or fermented dairy products instead of pasteurized ones). Though based on considerable research, the book is somewhat off-putting. Its emphasis on one ingredient-in the recipe section, for example, one sample menu has readers eating a dish with coconut in it seven times in one day-seems nutritionally suspicious.

I ate better than every before with this author's philosophy...

This book is the best approach to adopting a healthy eating lifestyle while not having to sacrifice eating great tasting food. I devised my own plan based upon recipes and recommendations and I lost 26lbs. in roughly 40 days. The best part of this approach is I ate better than any other "diet" I ever tried before. I still eat this way today and maintain a comfortable weight and feel amazing. I feel healthy. I have energy. I am happy. I do not feel deprived or wanting for flavorful food. This book changed my life! I hope it does for you too. Like all books say, consult your physician before trying any change in your typical diet. Health Recovery is BRILLIANT, but Quick and Easy Weight Loss didn't live up to the promise

I wanted to love this book, I really did. I purchased it after I had already purchased Nourishing Traditions and Sally Fallon's broth book as well, and implementing her Health Restore traditional eating diet in this book RADICALLY turned my health around for the better - I no longer suffered from anxiety, I no longer suffered from depression, my osteoarthritis was gone, my weight was stable, my heart problems had gone away, and I was happy. Then one day, I was no longer happy with my weight, and decided it was time to turn to the Quick and Easy Weight Loss section to continue on this happy path. I was VERY excited the first and second weeks, when I lost 2 pounds each week.
As a former Weight Watchers leader who had lost 79 pounds on Weight Watchers, I had been taught, and myself taught others, that in a healthy diet you could expect a weight loss of just one pound per week. Then the third week into the program, I didn't lose anything, not even inches. Same thing for the fourth week. 2 days before the approach of the end of my 5th week weigh in, I weighed myself and found exactly what I'd suspected - nothing lost AGAIN.
So I put my analytical brain to the test and started to sleuth out the problem:
What were my portion sizes, had they grown too large? No
What about my calorie count, had it exceeded 2,500 calories per day? No
What about my oil, was I eating enough coconut oil? Yes

Then I remembered a video I'd watched called Cereal Killers, and Prof Tim Noakes and his High Fat Low Carb Diet. I discovered he'd written a book about it, and after investigation discovered that what had happened, in fact, during weeks 3, 4, and 5, were that my CARBOHYDRATE intake had increased. Not a lot, but I was eating oatmeal every day for breakfast.
So I began adding in Prof Noakes' guidelines for keeping carbohydrates between 25g and 50 g per day, and for the last 2 days prior to my Week 5 weight in, I kept them low, and didn't have oatmeal for breakfast. Result? I lost another 2 pounds at week 5 weigh in. IN 2 DAYS. Contrast that with the full week it took on this program for each of the first two weeks.
I have continued Banting (the diet that Prof Noakes recommends) and have continued to lose a pound a day for the past 4 days.
Can I recommend this book? ABSOLUTELY!!! If you are new to healthy eating, if you have degenerative diseases that need addressing, BUY IT, implement the Health Recovery strategies and you'll be loving yourself for it!
BUT, if you are like me and suffer from carbohydrate intolerance (and everyone is different, everyone metabolizes carbohydrates differently), then consider keeping a keen eye on your carbohydrate intake and make sure it stays between 25g and 50g per day, and you'll have much more success.
Prof Tim Noakes wrote the book 'The Real Meal Revolution' and I highly recommend it as well as Eat Fat, Lose Fat to anyone who is seriously interested in improving their health for the better.

Try it you'll Love It

Excellent book. Love the results I am getting.

I was not on a low fat diet, but averaged 25-35% but still struggled to lose weight. I was eating 1200-1400 calorie a day and struggling. I had reduced carbs to 50 to 100 grams of carbs and had problems sleeping, concentrating.

I have been following her instructions and have raised fat content in my diet to 50-60%. Carbs and Proteins around 20% each. Veggies unlimited. Calories have increased to 1600-2000. I am losing more weight on the higher calories than the low calorie. My weight is also coming off consistently without the ups and downs as before. Although part of that was being caused by emulsifiers and thickeners. I am no longer plateauing since completely eliminating trans fats(canola, soy, corn oils). I don't have any cravings at all. My energy level is up and I feel really good. I do an hour of water aerobics every day. My concentration is also a lot better and I don't feel like I am in a fog. I sleep extremely well. I eat a lot of food and am still losing weight.

It is amazing that what our regular medical doctors are telling us are making us unhealthy. I have been doing this for 5 weeks and have lost 10 lbs and it wasn't a struggle. One of those weeks was vacation. The previous 20 lbs lost was a major struggle.

Excellent book! Before that, I did not know anything about weight watcher diet. I learned from this book that this diet is great to me. For me, the most important thing is that the diet helps easy to calculate the benefits of products through a points system. In the book, a lot of tables that make it easy to use diet to lose weight.

About the Author

David R. Greatrix is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada, having taught and conducted research there since 1993. He has previously worked or studied for the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg; Canadair Group of Bombardier, Inc., Montreal; Boeing Canada, Winnipeg Division; the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies; and Defence Research Establishment Valcartier, Quebec.

Not bad!

Not bad. This is a good introduction to aerospace (both air-breathing an rocket) propulsion. Overall, the level is clearly undergraduate and there are a lot of illustrations in this book. However, you need some background in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics in order to follow this text. So I only recommand this book for third or fourth year undergraduate students.

The book contains a short introduction to aircraft performance. Not a bad idea since this give the reader a "feeling" about the importance of aerospace propulsion. The treatment of the first part (Airplane propulsion) is relatively standard and unimpressive but correct. The author covers propeller theory, internal combustion engine, pulsejet, turbojet, turbofan and turboprop in about 250pages. However, there are some new interesting information in the second part (Rocket propulsion) particularly for solid-propellant rocket motors and hybrid rocket engines. Some information maybe even usefull for graduate students.

Overall, this book is only a introduction to aerospace propulsion and doesn't contain much details, specially for the first part. The book is about 500 pages long, but considering appendix and figures and example problems, there are not so much left for technical content. Each chapter of this book follows the same style. Example are limited but each chapter contains a set of solved problems. I personnally don't like this idea. I would prefer well integrated examples in the text and problems without complete solutions at the end. Completes solutions are not a good idea, the temptation is too high for the student.

About the Author
Joseph Boyden’s first novel, Three Day Road, won numerous awards including the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and the McNally Robinson Aboriginal Book of the Year. His second novel, Through Black Spruce, was awarded the Scotiabank Giller Prize and named the Canadian Booksellers Association Book of the Year; it also earned him the CBA’s Author of the Year Award. The Orenda was a finalist for the Governor General’s English Language Prize and the Scotiabank Giller Award, and won the Libris Book of the Year Award. In 2012, Boyden received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to Canadian art and culture. Boyden is a member of the creative writing faculty at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He divides his time between Northern Ontario and Louisiana.

What constitutes a 5-star book?

This sweepingly ambitious novel by Joseph Boyden - a 500 page epic - focuses strongly on all these successes as well as failures in the early beginnings of Canada, when the Huron, the Iroquois as the Jesuit missionaries clashed together. It's narrated by three characters: the well-respected Huron warrior Bird, the Iroquois girl Snow Falls, whom he claims as his daughter after slaying her true family, and Christophe, a French Jesuit missionary whose faith defines his very existence.

It is evident that Joseph Boyden did exhaustive work to unearth this story of 17th century Canada. It rings of authenticity, from the description of the missionaries (called "crows" because of the way they are perceived to hop around and peck at the dead or dying... the oki, or soul, that resides within each human, animal and thing...the rules of battle between the Huron and the Iroquois...the meticulous creation of the wampum belt...and so much more.

The cultural barriers between the Huron and Iroquois and the Christians are both dark and brutal and enlightening. Torture, to the Christians, was a barbarian act used to punish and demean. The Huron and the Iroquois used another word for torture: they called it "caressing", and its purpose was to honor their captured and to celebrate a strong spirit that a courageous enemy might possess. Mr. Boyden goes into great detail about the torturing rituals and while the scenes are definitely cringe-worthy, they heightened my understanding enormously.

But let's get back to the start of this review: the measurement of success. That measurement left me conflicted for many days now, contemplating how to measure a book such as the one Joseph Boyden wrote.

From a literary standpoint? There are many passages that are six-star brilliant. The opening, in which he twins his characters with animals (I wasn't quite sure if I were reading about a human or an animal) was beautifully crafted. Descriptions of the inadvertent harm caused by the Jesuits - upsetting a balance generations in the making, and shifting from a more mystical view of the world to one in which humans crave more and more control are stunningly portrayed.

Yet there are also times when the prose falls down, or doesn't strive nearly hard enough. As the story becomes more of an adventurous telling, I missed finding out more about the interior lives of the characters. Yes, Christophe is faith-filled and resilient, but what in his past made him so? Is he ever troubled by the beginnings of doubt? And yes, Snow Falls is a wonderfully rebellious character, but how is it possible for her to balance her growing daughterly love with the knowledge of her family's massacre? Some of the prose appears out of place, as when Bird turns to his sidekick Fox and explodes, "Tell me again why I thought bringing them among us was a good idea?"

So over and over I asked myself: what determines a 5-star book? Is it a book that educates us or morally enlightens us? Is it a book that grabs us by the collar and won't let go until we breathlessly turn the last page? Is it a book that changes our way of thinking and remains in our minds, long after it's been read? Or is it a book that is defined by consistently sterling prose and authentic characters?

The best answer is "all of the above." Those are the books that end up as classics and I don't think Joseph Boyden's The Orenda is quite there. But days later, I can't get the book and its contents out of my mind. It may be flawed for this reader, but I'm giving it 5 stars. There's too much that is good about it to give anything less.

Jesuits and Huron: Canada's raw conception

I've enjoyed two stark and harrowing novels about this same subject, the Jesuit-meets-Huron event in Canada in the early 17th century. Both Brian Moore's "Black Robe" (and the Bruce Beresford film) and William T. Vollmann's "Fathers and Crows" treat the Iron People (French) and the native Wendat (Huron) with sensitivity and insight. "The Orenda" balances neatly its similar perspectives, alternating as did Vollmann between indigenous and Christian participants, but at about half the length (see my "Fathers" review) as so much ethnographic detail and personal reflection expanded Vollmann's account. Moore chose a sparer register to filter his Jesuit missionary's travails among the wilderness and privation and torture.

Joseph Boyden captures both the sprawl of a novel delving relentlessly into a harsh land and a brutal mentality, and the precision of a narrative pair who square off, Bird and Christophe. This novel strips down the details so what remains stands out. In the first dozen pages, already you struggle to keep up with the back-and-forth tension as enemies lurk and death arrives suddenly. As a chronicler of two acclaimed novels, inspired by his own family's roots in the First Nations, this Canadian writer applies a steady eye to the realities of culture clash.

"The weight these men give their dreams will be the end of them." The first paragraph of the first chapter closes as the young Frenchman passes judgement on his captors and those he has been sent to convert. How the charcoal-clad newcomers, as well as the ancient people, possess the "orenda" (the life force) provides the mystery for the First Nations. They wonder how to manage the French. As Gosling warns Bird, these "crows" are "very difficult to tame."

The machinations that ensue, as a Jesuit captive proves valuable in the complications that overtake all the Wendat, dramatic as Moore and Vollmann showed well, here deepen as Boyden takes a nuanced perspective, equally careful to tell this story fairly. This novel expects concentration, and like its intent, wary characters, you are pulled into their mindsets in a vernacular that speaks in our own phrasing, but is whittled down meticulously to express a slightly altered time and setting, attesting to Boyden's skill at rendering this distance vividly.

Enriched by his own sensibility, it can be argued that Boyden's advantage in being placed as he is within the meeting of the two nations deepens the accuracy of his aim: to sharpen our wits as those here must, in order to survive the results of what God and country, iron and warfare, demand. I'll leave off plot summary but I'll encourage you to settle into this historical novel with an awareness that your focus will be rewarded, as your investment in this bracing, bewildering landscape, and the mentalities that it cuts open and tears into, pays off movingly.

Brilliant writing and extensive research, but no spark of life

The novel consists of three intertwined first-person accounts in 1630's North America by a Huron war leader, an Iroquois girl and a Jesuit missionary. Details of life in native villages and Quebec City are accurate and sharply drawn. If you're looking for a painless way to absorb some history and ethnography, you will enjoy this book.

The Orenda is something of a throwback, it reminds me of 1950s stories by authors like Dorothy Johnson. While on one level the native way of life is respected, the respect is based on antiscientific romanticism rather than sincere appreciation of the culture and its accomplishments. European culture is viewed through the same lens, which results in caricature. Science was right and superstition was wrong, and enlightened rationalism leads to peaceful progress, prosperity and human dignity while romanticism leads to horror. If you don't believe those things, or deliberately ignore them, there's not much to like in modern European history.

Starting in the 1960s, colonial-period North American historical fiction gradually developed a more mature and balanced view of the catastrophic cultural and biological collisions from 1600 to 1900. An epic example is Thomas Pynchon's Mason and Dixon. But the deeper truths in these books have not generated iconic stories as compelling as the earlier style.

The Orenda is almost as wordy and slow as Pynchon, and as out-of-date in its condescension as Johnson. I found this combination less satisfactory than either original. Joseph Boyden has the talent to write a literary masterpiece, but this fails due to lack of respect for characters and readers, and because the story is derivative for all the impressive research. For pure escapist enjoyment, Johnson packs more punch in ten well-chosen words than Boyden can manage in a chapter.

Despite these criticisms, it is a brilliantly written book, that displays extensive research artfully. It's not quite a great novel, and not quite a great history. It's got all the ingredients, but it needs a bolt of lightning to give it life.

Another Keeper from Gilbert Morris

As always, Gilbert Morris delivers a story which teaches a lot about history, in this case the history of Jewish/Russian immigrants to America, and provides an uplifting story that points to God. A lot of the struggles of the main character, Reisa, mirror the struggles many people of other faiths experience when confronted with the truth of Christianity. If you enjoy Christian fiction, especially that set in post-civil war America, you will enjoy this well written novel.

I found this book to be rather stodgy and slow-moving albeit a touching love story. Knowing what I now know about the story I probably wouldn't buy it but hey, that's just me. I'm not huge on plots that rely heavily on romance to keep the reader interested

This wonderful, inspirational book helps Christians like myself understand how Jewish folks view God, allowing one to sense their deep love and repect of God. As the story line shows, Christians can gently lead Jews to Jesus through example. Mr. Morris subtly suggests this through the main character in the book. There is plenty of action and history and the book reads easily and smoothly. Mr. Morris helps bring home the point that the gift of salvation is for EVERYONE!

Read this book!!!!

You must read this book. Martin Booth adored Hong Kong and its inhabitants. His view of Hong Kong life in the early 1950's is so clear, so non-judgmental, that you feel you are living those years with him, in the body and mind of a 7-10 year old boy. What a great curiosity, what a deeply compassionate heart this little boy had! I wish Mr. Booth were still alive and that I could meet him. I'd love to hear more of his stories, more of his life, this time in person.

I loved this book. I have not been to Hong Kong but it was so descriptive that I was there. I was looking down from the house on the Peak and I lived the fear of the Typhoon. The characters were so real that you could almost talk to them yourself. His mother was an unusual woman for her time but his father was a sad man caught up in the British convention, a man of little spirit who so wanted to be thought of as important. It was a boys own adventure with a moral.

A young English boy lives in Hong Kong. His father is a military buffoon and his loving and attractive mother encourages her son to explore the island, make friends, and welcomes the exposure to an ancient and fascinating culture. He has all kinds of adventures and is a fearless explorer. He absorbs the ever changing scenery at the port and describes the ferocity of the typhoons so well.
It is fresh and funny and spiced with the sexual atmosphere of an international base.

An entertaining read that never flags.

perfect ending to a beautiful love story

At Peace is the conclusion to Dennis and Tucker’s beautiful and hot love story. I loved these two characters. From the moment that I met Dennis is Sweet Renegade I wanted to see him get his own book. From the moment Dennis and Tucker were together, even if only friends I knew that they would be amazing together. They just fit so perfectly. Given what they had both been through they understood each other in ways no one else could. Between the comfort, the love and the attraction you just knew that it would not be long before these two became more than just friends. Their relationship up until the very end of the second book, War Torn, seemed to be perfect. But then Ms. Large threw a twist in there that left us wondering if these two would survive.

At the end of War Torn Tucker walked away for persona reasons. He needed to deal with some stuff and needed to go home to do that. But even if in his mind leaving was only temporary, he left Dennis with a shattered heart. Dennis loves Ticker more than anything in this world. But right now he is hurt by Tucker’s actions and at this point you are not sure how and if these two can get past it all. Tucker screwed up and now needs to do everything in his power to make it right. The question is will Dennis be able to forgive him and get back to the way they were?

What I loved the most about Dennis and Tucker is that when they both first realized their feelings for each other they never questioned it. It all felt so right to them that they never once had a hard time with the fact that they were in love with a man. They had both though of themselves as heterosexual men. But things change and so do feelings. So when Tucker made a decision at the end of War Torn I think I was just as hurt as Dennis was. I wondered how he could do that to us. But in the beginning of At Peace you understand his reasons better. You see exactly what he is going through and why he needed to confront it all. And all I will say is that Tucker more than redeemed himself.

Tucker and Dennis together is just hot and sexy and absolutely adorable. They love each other so much. They have been through hell and back but being together helps them both to get past it all. I wanted them to work it out. I wanted Dennis to be able to forgive and move on, because these two were just meant to be together. Their love felt so real. I have always said that Ms. Large knows how to write a MM romance. She knows how to make the reader not only feel the passion between them but the love as well. There love never felt anything other than real and genuine. There is a moment where Tucker confronts his family and I loved the reactions and the decisions that his family members made. It wasn’t over the top, and it wasn’t unrealistic at all. Everything about their story just felt real. It was a beautiful to watch Dennis and Tucker fall in love and find their happiness. Great ending for this trilogy!

After waiting and anticipating what would happen between Dennis and talker, I finally got my answer and I am completely thrill of the results!!! It's true what the author says, Van Dennis story started with a internal war battle and it ended with the peaceful love that talker gave him. Of course talker wasn't left behind I'll doubt he had to battle with his own struggles and brother for the peas he also needed. I don't like to give spoilers but I hope that the author would gave is maybe eight novella or maybe a new story about Tucker's brother and would happen to him. That's situation was never resolved at leastv not all of it. Either way this was a perfect ending for Dennis and talk her story!!!! Give it a try and happy reading!!!

Ohhh this was the best one yet

Let me just reiterate that this author has done her homework. Our veterans are still fighting a battle after they come home, it's sad that they go fight for our freedom and come home to suffer untold horrors. Well I'm glad this author has found a wAy to tell their story and give them an hea. My praise to you. Andrea for one of the best stories I've read in a long time. I've laughed, cried, and laughed some more your characters are on spot and the trauma they suffer is as real as our war veterans today. I hope you keep writing. I can't wait to read more. Thanks for a magical journey.
